Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts On Roku - Day 08: Horror Series Beginning With The Letter 'H' !!

Greetings, Boils & Ghouls...

... and welcome to 'Day Eight' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku" where I aim to bring you another batch of Hallowe'en / Horror-related audio series from the plethora of petrifying podcasts that have been released in recent years - any of which can be streamed to your TV via the magic of Roku media players - so, let's dim down those lights... for more audio frights! :-O ;-) :-D

If you read my special hallowe'en blogathon preview - FOUND HERE - that I published eight days ago, then you'll know I plan to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article every day, throughout the month of October, featuring an assortment of links to various podcasts beginning with the same letter of the alphabet each and every day. For the sake of simplicity, I decided to begin this series of blog posts with the letter 'A' on 'Day One', followed by letter 'B' on 'Day Two', letter 'C' on 'Day Three', and so on and so forth, right the way through to letter 'Z' on 'Day Twenty-Six'. Obviously that will still leave five more days worth of posts, by the time we reach the end of the alphabet, so I'll put my thinking cap on (between now & then) to (hopefully) come up with some extra audio "treats" for you by then. With thirty-one posts of the most spook-tacular sounding series I can find, between now and the end of the month, you'll have lots of great choice for your listening pleasure as we count the days to Hallowe'en, as well as plenty of spine-tingling thrills & chills 'twixt now and All Hallows' Eve on October 31st! :-D

For my eighth post in this series I'm going to share some links to a much larger number of audio "treats" than the last few days, but (once again) they're all from the general spectrum of horror and the paranormal, and the unifying "trick" (sic) is that the title for each of these podcast series begins with the letter 'H' - although some artistic licence has been taken to ignore "The", when used at the start of the title, so as to avoid having to post too many links for letter 'T' on 'Day Twenty' of this month-long blogathon. So, without further ado, here are my suggestions for Hallowe'en / Horror-related podcast series... the titles for which all begin with the letter 'H' of the (horror) alphabet:-

The H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast: The producers of 'The H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast' have been creating podcasts and audio productions since 2009! Each week, hosts Chad Fifer and Chris Lackey discuss a piece of weird fiction. Talented voice actors bring the text to life. Music and sound effects create atmosphere while occasional guest experts show up to make things classy. HPPodcraft is the gold standard in literary podcasting. All their initial shows on the works of H.P. Lovecraft are free, and they continue to produce one free show a month, at the top of every month. You can get the three remaining shows as well as two bonus monthly shows by subscribing on Patreon. It’s fun... and more than a little creepy! :-O Won’t you join them? :-) The horrid truth is: you already have! ;-) :-D

Halloween Unmasked: If you’re a fan of horror movies, John Carpenter’s "Halloween" casts a long shadow on the genre. Film critic Amy Nicholson has been going over the story behind the classic franchise, looking not just at the making of the 1978 original, but why fans have stuck with the series in the decades since, all the way up to David Gordon Green’s new entry in the franchise. If you go to the 'Castbox' website (see link below), in addition to the eight-part 'Halloween Unmasked' podcast miniseries, you'll also get to hear a bonus three-part miniseries from the Ringer Podcast Network, in which Quentin Tarantino sits down to talk about five films he's programmed at his Los Angeles movie palace, the New Beverly Cinema. Then, along the way, the conversation takes an unexpected journey into the director's personal history, career, and what powers his movie obsessions! :-O ;-) :-D

Happy Face: For Melissa Moore, 1995 was a nightmare. That’s the year the teenager learned her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, was a serial killer. It’s also the year Melissa Moore’s doubt spiral began: When you look like your father, and you share his intelligence and charisma, how do you know you’re not a psychopath, too? Happy Face is the story of Keith Hunter Jesperson, his brutal crimes, and the cat and mouse game he played with detectives and the media. But it’s also the story of the horrific legacy he gifted his children. Join Melissa Moore as she investigates her father’s crimes, reckons with the past, and wades through her darkest fears as she hunts for a better future! :-O ;-) :-D

Haunted Places: The Podcast Where Every Place Is Haunted - from Parcast Network come these audio tours of haunted locations and their equally creepy back-stories. Each week, 'Haunted Places' takes listeners around a haunted house, a cemetery, and even a haunted island! :-O It's fun, macabre, and well-produced. What makes it so interesting, is the idea that some places are forever haunted. Maybe it's because of a curse, or perhaps a long-forgotten murder, but it definitely conveys a feeling that the darkness of certain places can never go away. Greg Polcyn (Co-Host of Serial Killers and Cults) takes you on an audio tour of a new haunted place, and it’s haunted history, every episode. Spooky legends, weird histories, and tales of the supernatural... Listen at your own risk! :-O ;-) :-D 'Haunted Places' is a production of Cutler Media and part of the Parcast Network. New episodes are released every Thursday. The top-notch writing and high-quality sound effects add to the show's foggy feel, though cloying sponsorship appeals and the obvious sense of "pretend" do somewhat limit the "fright factor" of this series. Suffice to say that, if scary places aren't your thing, this podcast won't be for you. Likewise, if you have an aversion to long and intrusive sponsorship appeals, you will probably wish to look elsewhere for your horror podcast fix. Aside from that, my only other (slight) criticism is how each of these episodes might work a bit better if it had a different narrator.

FROM THE 'GEEK.COM' WEBSITE: Eerie locations don’t gain their paranormal status overnight. Leave it up to “Haunted Places,” a podcast hosted by Greg Polcyn that gives you the 411 on creepy folklore. You’ll hear the backstories of numerous ghostly places worldwide, including the Palacio de Linares in Spain and the Harvey Public Library in Harvey, North Dakota. From flickering lights to spirit sightings, you’ll want to know more about some of the most haunted places on Earth!

Horror 101: If you're not familiar with the North American use of "101", alongside any subject you care to mention, it is to indicate that it's for beginners - i.e. a starting point, or springboard - from which to commence your "education" in that particular field. And so it is with 'Horror 101', whose presenters stick firmly to their belief that: "Whoever you are, wherever you are... there's a horror movie out there that's JUST for you -- and we're gonna help you find it!". The show features soundtrack music, audio clips from the films they are discussing, and trivia. It's a fun little podcast: hosted by Cash Wampum, Brian Stewart, and Nick MacPherson, but sometimes brings-in various other co-hosts, depending on the show. It is very informative, and they often focus on "hidden gems" within the genre which you may (or may not) have missed, including many of the greatest horror titles from the last few decades. These guys know their stuff, offering little insights & opinions that will ensure you have a great time listening to this horror podcast out of Windsor, Ontario. It's highly entertaining, and (dare I say it?) a "must" for all horror podcast fans, so be sure to join Cash and his cohorts as they celebrate the cream of horror movies - because, you may just learn something! ;-) :-D

Horror Movie Podcast: A bi-weekly horror movie review podcast, hosted by Jay of the Dead, Wolfman Josh Ligairi, Dr. Shock and Dr. Walking Dead himself, Kyle Bishop, which describes itself as "Celebrating Slasher Films" and being "Dead Serious About Horror Movies" - moreover it is one which also prides itself on taking deep, dark dives into pig-head horror, slasher films, and multiple zombie apocalypses! :-D The show hosts' abiding love of horror movies definitely seeps through, and this podcast regularly introduces it's listeners to horror films that few would even know existed. It's among the best podcasts for in-depth reviews of recent releases. The three hosts have an excellent rapport and it helps that they're all general cinephiles, not just horror fans. There's an episode that features 'Sundance' coverage, including reviews of horror movies at the festival and interviews with a couple of filmmakers, which is quite revealing. All episodes are themed, and feature ratings plus film recommendations, to help you decide which chiller or thriller movie you should be watching. The only (possible) downside, depending on how much free-time you have available, is that the episodes can have a tendency to go on way too long - so be sure to check the total run time(s) beforehand! ;-) :-D

Horror Movie Talk: is a horror movie podcast featuring "two schlubby guys", namely Bryce Hanson (the cool, collected nihilist) and David Day (an angry man that is always right), who talk about the horror movies that are either in theatres, or available for streaming, plus a few old favourites, and some that are "so bad they're good"... you know the type! ;-) New theatrical releases always get priority, but they also review older horror movies both good and horror-ble. Once described as being "An opinionated and accidentally funny horror movie review show!" - though don't ask me by whom - so why not give a listen to an episode... just to see whether you agree with them, or not! ;-) :-D

The Horror of Dolores Roach: is a new scripted fiction podcast, starring Daphne Rubin-Vega along with Bobby Cannavale. Written by Aaron Mark, it tells a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and the survival of the fittest. After sixteen years in prison, the indomitable Dolores Roach returns to a New York City neighbourhood that has changed drastically in her absence. Boyfriend missing, her family long gone, Dolores is recognised only by an old stoner friend, Luis, who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his dilapidated empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, the woman now known as “Magic Hands Dolores” is driven to extremes to survive! :-O ;-) :-D

Horror Queers Podcast: is a weekly podcast series in which (for every episode) the "Horror Queers" hosts, Joe Lipsett and Trace Thurman, tackle a horror film with either LGBTQ+ themes, a high camp quotient, or (sometimes) both. For these life-long queer horror fans, there’s as much value in having serious discussions about representation as there is in reading a ridiculously silly/fun horror film with a YAS KWEEN mentality. Just know that at no point will they be getting Babashook! :-O ;-) :-D

Great for breaking down how horror is used, or for tips on creating your own horror tales. The love and rage which is expressed by the hosts over an assortment of horror films and stories is great for sparking ideas and discussion... with the idea being it will help listeners craft their own stories. However existing episodes are not exactly professionally produced, and no new ones are likely, so… by all means, enjoy it for what it is, but expect no more!

The Horror! - Old Fashioned Fear from Relic Radio: is a horror fiction podcast which takes a pretty unique approach to podcasting: in that each story told is an old-time radio show. Run by Relic Radio, 'The Horror!' plays classic shows from the 1930's to the 1970's, with a modern-day intro and outro cut into the mix around it. This series is geared toward anyone who enjoys old-school horror via modern technology. Among the stories shared on this podcast are "Give the Devil His Due" from CBS Radio Mystery Theater (1974) and "The Hollow Footsteps" from Peter Lorre’s Nightmare series of 1954. You’ll hear them compare a lot of things to classic radio theatre, because it has informed and inspired many creatives in the horror genre. But what if you’ve never heard any of them before? Well, that's when you’re in for a real treat... as 'The Horror!' podcast series shares it all, and with a little bit more!
It's great, because they don’t just re-air old 1960’s (and earlier) horror radio shows, they also tell you a little bit about the show and when it was originally aired. It’s horror stories mixed with history and, if that appeals, this series will soon have you hooked. Also, unlike other old-time radio podcasts,  the quality of their audio stays fairly consistent and that makes listening to it far easier. If anything such pops, crackles and decay that exist serve only to add more atmosphere to the performance, rather than impede the listening experience - a factor to which other podcasts in this niche have fallen victim.

The Hysteria Continues: is a podcast dedicated to that most reviled of horror sub-genres: the slasher movie. Produced by the following collective of authors/speakers: Justin Kerswell, Joseph Henson, Erik Threlfall, Nathan Johnson, and featuring the occasional guest. This podcast is all about slasher flicks and, aside from providing tons of great content, even the way these guys present the show is absolutely hilarious. Despite their main focus, they do (occasionally) stray over to other films that may not be considered "slashers" in the traditional definition of the sub-genre... but, in one way or another, they do tend to have some sort of loose connection. The hosts are knowledgeable, and the cast has even been called upon to do fan commentaries for modern releases of old slasher flicks, their newest being on a re-release of cult classic "The Burning!", which I love. Those who've listened to this show for a while seem to overwhelmingly recommend it... so, if you enjoy a good slasher flick, why not give this series - devoted (almost) entirely to the genre - a listen, and see what you think! ;-)
