Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts On Roku - Day 18: Horror Series Beginning With The Letter 'R' !!

Greetings, Boils & Ghouls...

... and welcome to 'Day Eighteen' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku" where I aim to bring you another batch of Hallowe'en / Horror-related audio series from the plethora of petrifying podcasts that have been released in recent years - any of which can be streamed to your TV via the magic of Roku media players - so, let's dim down those lights... for more audio frights! :-O

If you read my special hallowe'en blogathon preview - FOUND HERE - that I published eighteen days ago, then you'll know I plan to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article each day, throughout the month of October, featuring an assortment of links to various podcasts beginning with the same letter of the alphabet every day of the month. For the sake of simplicity, I decided to begin this series of blog posts with the letter 'A' on 'Day One', followed by letter 'B' on 'Day Two', letter 'C' on 'Day Three', and so on and so forth, right the way through to letter 'Z' on 'Day Twenty-Six'. Obviously that will still leave five more days worth of posts, by the time we reach the end of the alphabet, so I'll put my thinking cap on (between now & then) to (hopefully) come up with some extra audio "treats" for you by then. With thirty-one posts of the most spook-tacular sounding series I can find, between now and the end of the month, you'll have lots of great choice for your listening pleasure as we count the days to Hallowe'en, as well as plenty of spine-tingling thrills & chills 'twixt now and All Hallows' Eve on October 31st! :-D

For my eighteenth post in this series I'm going to share links to a (significantly) larger amount of audio "treats" than there were yesterday, but (again) they'll all be from the general spectrum of horror and the paranormal, with the unifying "trick" (sic) being that the title for each of these podcast series begins with the letter 'R' - although (again) artistic licence has been taken to ignore "The", when used at the start of the title, to avoid posting too many links for letter 'T' on 'Day Twenty' of this month-long blogathon. So, without further ado, here are my suggestions for Hallowe'en / Horror-related podcast series... the titles for which all begin with the letter 'R' of the (horror) alphabet:-

Rabbits: is an horror-thriller (pseudo-documentary styled) podcast from the Public Radio Alliance. Written and produced by Terry Miles, 'Rabbits' is the story of a woman named Carly Parker whose friend, Yumiko "Miko" Takata, goes missing under very mysterious circumstances. Carly’s search for her friend leads her headfirst into a decades-old alternate reality game known as "Rabbits", or simply "The Game", which she quickly discovers may (or may not) be real. Carly soon begins to suspect that 'Rabbits' is much more than just a game, and comes to the conclusion that the key to understanding 'Rabbits' might also be key to the survival of our species (and the universe) as we know it! :-O ;-) :-D

The Rants Macabre: is a podcast about all things horror. Don’t let the name fool you, though, because they delve into the genre with sharp focus and a deep production (think 'Radiolab' for scary movies). Every month they tackle a new subject in horror and share their findings. Co-hosts Darren Rosario and Mindy Learnard want you to love scary movies as much as they do... so they don’t over-share plots, or give spoilers. They do, however, frequently veer-off on fascinating tangents involving the historical context of the films or concepts being covered. There's also an occasional feature, going by the name of "Mindy’s Music Corner", in which she delves into the music theory pertaining to the scene(s) being discussed and, if you’re at all interested in music on that level, you're bound to love it. The chemistry between the two co-hosts is great and, as you'll soon discover if you give this a listen, that both have infectious laughs... just as well, given hilarity ensues quite often in this series! :-D

The Ray Harryhausen Podcast: is a podcast series dedicated to the life, career and films of a special effects titan. Seriously folks, if the sword-fighting skeleton in the above image does not strike a chord with you, I'd recommend you check-out the IMDb page for Ray Harryhausen to get an idea of what the man did over the years and urge you to (at least) visit some of the titles from his vast filmography to bear witness to his achievements. Ray passed away in 2013 but during his career in film, spanning more than sixty years, he was best known for imaginative stop-motion special effects: as showcased in fantasy films depicting Greek Mythological / Arabian Nights stories, such as the trilogy of 'Sinbad' films plus the 'Jason and the Argonauts' movie, in which his work really stood-out. Before the advent of CGI, this is how it was done... and, if you ask me, it was well worth the effort. Every time! :-D ;-)

Real Ghost Stories Online: is a daily paranormal podcast filled with real tales of terror, told by real people. All areas of the paranormal, supernatural, demonic, ghost investigations, haunted houses, possessions, shadow people, the unexplained and more are covered. Listeners have described this as "a podcast full of great spooky stories" many times over. One particularly avid listener wrote: "Not the same old boring zombies, vampires, witches and werewolves! This is the best ghost story podcast out there", and another observed how this 'Real Ghost Stories Online' podcast "...combines the best parts of other ghost-story & paranormal podcasts to deliver a solid, spooky experience that is better than Coast to Coast AM, George Noorey, or Art Bell"! So, if you enjoy listening to real people, who tell real ghost stories, be prepared to have the world of the undead brought to (ahem) life with this daily dose of true accounts - not just fictional tales - about the many spirits that surround us. Likewise if you have your own story to share, you can call-in with details of your real experiences with ghosts, or other supernatural events, anytime at: +1 855 - 853 - 4802 or write-in via the website (link below). Just remember, if calling from the UK, that the above number is located within the United States, so you would need to either have a good international calling plan, or (at least) be aware of an inevitable increase in calling costs versus dialling a number in the United Kingdom. Whether you have a story of your own to contribute, or not, there's something about listening to real accounts (as opposed to the usual mythical tales of spooky urban legends) which makes this experience even more creepy! :-O ;-)

Reel Crime - feat. The Movie Sleuth: is not a true 100% horror-themed show, but more of a podcast on all things entertainment. However, they do discuss horror on a fairly frequent basis and have quite a good back-catalogue of deep-dig stuff that chronicles long-running franchises and such like! ;-) :-D

Return Home: is a serialised comedy / horror podcast, presented by Bamfer Productions, that's been constructed like a fun, Old Time Radio (OTR) serial, but with a modern sensibility. You could think of it as an "OTR meets Modern Horror" podcast. Described as "Quirky and comedic, with plenty of jump scares"... 'Return Home' also benefits from fantastic audio production. The voice acting is very good, and each episode is part of a larger story arc, meaning it's a fun podcast to get trapped inside. Created by Jeff Heimbuch who, along with Andrew Taylor, also co-produced the series... it features an original musical score by Kori Celeste. This audio drama, fully produced in stereo sound, tells the story of Jonathan Barker, "who returns to his hometown of Melancholy Falls, after five years away" to discover the place filled with alien body snatchers and mysterious happenings. Having come back for the first time since he was a teenager, he's confused by some strange voices who are demanding that he “return home” and, with the help of an old friend, he embarks on a journey to figure out where and what “home” really is. So, if it's time for you to return home, why not follow Jonathan, Buddy, and Ami as they unravel the mysteries of Melancholy Falls? :-D Though you can listen however you’d like, it’s recommended you do so with headphones. Alone. And in a darkened room! :-O ;-)

Rosemary's Ladies Podcast:  is a podcast series in which two salty friends (Molly and Jen) eat snacks, drink wine, and discuss movies. 'Rosemary’s Ladies' was birthed in 2018 when the two decided there weren't enough female-fronted film review podcasts. Adult topics are sometimes discussed so please exercise caution, if allowing youngsters to listen, because they do love their swears! :-O The website describes this production as "a comedy film podcast where two mythical bitches do witty retellings of horror movies, bad movies, and bad horror movies". Elsewhere it has been described as "A comedy film podcast where two sassy trash queens eat snacks, drink adult beverages, and do witty re-tellings of horror movies, bad movies, and bad horror movie plots"... but, however you imagine them, expect to hear "hot button" issues they know everyone wonders about: like the state of the demon economy, how to legally evict a ghost, or if Godzilla’s pregnant belly is just a giant, baby-filled bingo cage! :-O
