Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts On Roku - Day 04: Horror Series Beginning With The Letter 'D' !!

Greetings, Boils & Ghouls...

... and welcome to 'Day Four' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku" where I aim to bring you another batch of Hallowe'en / Horror-related audio series from the plethora of petrifying podcasts that have been released in recent years - any of which can be streamed to your TV via the magic of Roku media players - so, let's dim down those lights... for yet more audio frights! :-O ;-)

If you read my special hallowe'en blogathon preview - FOUND HERE - that I published four days ago, then you'll know I plan to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article every day, throughout the month of October, featuring an assortment of links to various podcasts beginning with the same letter of the alphabet each and every day. For the sake of simplicity, I decided to begin this series of blog posts with the letter 'A' on 'Day One', followed by letter 'B' on 'Day Two', letter 'C' on 'Day Three', and so on and so forth, right the way through to letter 'Z' on 'Day Twenty-Six'. Obviously that will still leave five more days worth of posts, by the time we reach the end of the alphabet, so I'll put my thinking cap on (between now & then) to (hopefully) come up with some extra audio "treats" for you by then. With thirty-one posts of the most spook-tacular sounding series I can find, between now and the end of the month, you'll have lots of great choice for your listening pleasure as we count the days to Hallowe'en, as well as plenty of spine-tingling thrills & chills 'twixt now and All Hallows' Eve on October 31st! :-D

For my fourth post in this series I'm going to share some more links to another large amount of audio "treats", again in the form of various podcasts from the spectrum of horror and the paranormal, with the unifying "trick" (sic) that the title for each of these podcast series begins with the letter 'D' - although some artistic licence has been taken to ignore "The", when used at the start of the title, so as to avoid having to post too many links for letter 'T' on 'Day Twenty' of this month-long blogathon. So, without further ado, here are my suggestions for Hallowe'en / Horror-related podcast series... the titles for which all begin with the letter 'D' of the (horror) alphabet:-

The Dark Tome: produced by Fred Greenhalgh and William 'Bill' Dufris for Dagaz Media, is a new take on the anthology audio fiction podcast, featuring fantastic stories by contemporary authors from across the globe. What if there was a book that literally opened up doorways to other worlds? Where would it lead, and could you handle what you found on the other side? Cassie, a wayward teen, is about to find out! One day, after she wraps up community service at a local hospital, she stumbles out of the basement of a spooky bookshop and into a story set on a devil's staircase in a remote Italian village. If series and short stories aren't for you, this ongoing saga might be more to your liking! :-)

The Dark Verse: is a multiverse of Lovecraft-ian terror written and narrated by M. Amanuensis Sharkchild. It's an old-school horror podcast which offers-up classic tales of horror and fright, splayed with musings on the occult. It's a great horror podcast to dive into, featuring stories of the demented and the ghostly, with an impressive range of spooky stories and dark topics covered. Their short stories of occult, metaphysical, and fantastical horror will haunt you in your sleep. Their website reads: “The contents of the stories range from demented entities to gross worlds, undead recollections to philosophical and psychological possessions, and twisted, inventive imagery to unhindered terror" and, while they limit foul language, the content may not be suitable for everyone!

Darkest Night: is a pseudo anthology, from The Paragon Collective, that's among the most grizzly I know. It’s the kind of anthology in which every episode somehow ties together. Both the audio and the voice acting is great... with some well-known actors in the cast. Darkest Night is a binaural audio drama that places you, the listener, at the centre of a recovered memory which sounds as though it’s happening around you in real time. TIP: Best use headphones, if at all possible, for the greatest effect! Each chapter delves into the last memories of the recently deceased, slowly revealing a horrifying master plan. Who is weaving this master conspiracy, and what is their ultimate goal? Narrated by Lee Pace (The Hobbit Films, Guardians of the Galaxy, Pushing Daisies. Halt & Catch Fire, etc), Darkest Night features performances from Denis O'Hare (American Horror Story), Maynard James Keenan, Missi Pyle (The Artist & Dodgeball), RuPaul, Michelle Visage, and Jeffery Bowyer-Chapman.

The Darkroom: is a single narrator weird fiction audio drama podcast series. Written & narrated by Ian Harriman, every episode features a unique score by Ryan McGowan - who is also responsible for both the sound design and audio editing. The show is episodic, though each episode makes references to others. It falls into the cosmic horror / supernatural side of horror. An amateur photographer stumbles upon strange photographs he finds in old film cameras, showing him another world, just as real as our own, that exists in the shadows. The shadows of... the darkroom! :-O ;-) :-)

N.B. This is relatively new, with only four (15-20min) episodes, having only started in October 2018.

Dead Man Talking: Winner of the 'Silver' medal for 'Best True Crime Podcast' at the British Podcast Awards 2019, 'Dead Man Talking' tells the story of Angel Resendiz (aka The Railroad Killer) who criss-crossed the US by freight train in the 80s and 90s, choosing his victims at random, before he was executed by the State of Texas in 2006. Before his death, Resendiz spoke to journalist Alex Hannaford and claimed, on tape, to have killed more than he had taken the blame for. The authorities said Angel Resendiz was lying in an attempt to delay his own death. But, haunted by the crackly interview tape, Alex is determined to investigate. Then a letter arrives from a woman serving life in prison for her husband’s murder — telling him that Resendiz once confessed to that killing too! :-O

Deadly Manners: Deadly Manners is a 10 episode, dark comedy murder-mystery series set in the winter of 1954. It follows the events during the night of the affluent Billings family annual dinner party with their distinguished, eccentric guests. However, all is not fun and games as shortly after the party starts, a snowstorm begins to rage outside, trapping all the partygoers inside their host’s mansion. When a murderer starts killing off those in attendance, the guests must figure out who is responsible, or at least how to stay alive -- lest they be next! 'Deadly Manners' was created by Ali Garfinkel along with Alex Aldea, and stars Kristen Bell, Denis O'Hare, Alisha Boe, RuPaul, Anna Chlumsky, Timothy Simons, Michelle Visage, Alona Tal, David Cummings. It is narrated by LeVar Burton, with artwork by Kina Lee. This show was new for the Halloween 2017 season, and follows a party of well-to-do people (sometime in the 50's) when one of the entertainers is struck dead. Every episode, more & more die, and with less than five of them left, the guests are getting desperate! :-O
