Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts On Roku - Day 23: Horror Series Beginning With The Letter 'W' !!

Greetings, Boils & Ghouls...

... and welcome to 'Day Twenty-Three' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku" where I aim to bring you another batch of Hallowe'en / Horror-related audio series from the plethora of petrifying podcasts that have been released in recent years - any of which can be streamed to your TV via the magic of Roku media players - so, let's dim those lights... for some more audio frights! :-O

If you read my special hallowe'en blogathon preview - FOUND HERE - that I published twenty-three days ago, then you'll know I plan to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article each day, throughout the month of October, featuring an assortment of links to various podcasts beginning with the same letter of the alphabet every day of the month. For the sake of simplicity, I decided to begin this series of blog posts with the letter 'A' on 'Day One', followed by letter 'B' on 'Day Two', letter 'C' on 'Day Three', and so on and so forth, right the way through to letter 'Z' on 'Day Twenty-Six'. Obviously that will still leave five more days worth of posts, by the time we reach the end of the alphabet, so I'll put my thinking cap on (between now & then) to (hopefully) come up with some extra audio "treats" for you by then. With thirty-one posts of the most spook-tacular sounding series I can find, between now and the end of the month, you'll have lots of great choice for your listening pleasure as we count the days to Hallowe'en, as well as plenty of spine-tingling thrills & chills 'twixt now and All Hallows' Eve on October 31st! :-D

For my twenty-third post in this series I'm going to share links for a much larger amount of audio "treats" than there were yesterday, but (again) they'll all be from the general spectrum of horror and the paranormal, with the unifying "trick" (sic) being that the title for each of these podcast series will begin with the letter 'W' - and (once more) artistic licence has been taken to ignore "The", when used at the start of the title, to avoid having too many podcasts beginning with letter 'T' on 'Day Twenty' of this month-long blogathon. So, without further ado, here are my suggestions for Hallowe'en / Horror-related podcast series... the titles for which all begin with the letter 'W' of the (horror) alphabet:-

We're Alive: is an audio drama podcast series for fans of post-apocalyptic zombie horror. Described as "Audio Theater for the Mind", it's a type of show you can play in your head that's guided by the narrative, but carried by your imagination. Unlike film or television, audio dramas such as this have the power to strike a deeper emotional connection with the audience. Currrently in it's third season, called "Goldrush" set seventeen years after this ongoing saga began, you still have an opportunity to catch-up on 'Season One' (the self-titled "We're Alive" original story) as well as 'Season Two' in this series (the hugely popular "Lockdown", the first sequel to the original). Whether you're an existing fan, or yet to start, this a truly unique "Theater for the Mind" experience for listeners new and old! :-)

Weird Darkness:  is hosted by voice artist, Darren Marlar, who's also the creator of the podcast series. It features stories of real paranormal events and true crime, plus tales of the supernatural, legends, lore,  and other mysterious, macabre, unsolved or unexplained phenomena - all of which are narrated by the host. It's been compared to “Coast to Coast” with Art Bell, “The Twilight Zone” with Rod Serling, “Unsolved Mysteries” with Robert Stack, and “In Search Of” with Leonard Nimoy, among others. If you have a dark tale to tell, you can share it with them on the “Tell Your Story” page of their official website (see link below). Welcome To Night Vale: is a fictional podcast presented as a radio show being broadcast from the utterly damned town of Night Vale, located out in some undisclosed desert in the Southwestern U.S. where things happen to get pretty strange. Taking the form of twice-monthly community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, where every conspiracy theory is true, this may not pack a punch in the same way that a good, old-fashioned ghost story might do... but it does manage to weave some really creepy narratives. So, be prepared to turn on your radio and hide! :-O Never listened before? No problem. It's an ongoing radio show... so just start with the current episode, and you'll catch on in no time. Alternatively, go to 'Episode One' if you wanna binge-listen the whole thing! ;-) :-D

Werewolf Ambulance:  is a horror movie comedy podcast. Allen & Katie watch horror movies from all eras and of varying quality, then discuss them in a not-so-academic way (like the name "Werewolf Ambulance" might imply!) and rate them accordingly. The episodes contain the odd details that some may consider to be "spoilers", so please watch the films before listening - if that bothers you! ;-) :-D

Westside Fairytales: is a horror podcast series, created by Tyler Bell, which contains stories of the cruel and (sometimes) grotesque happenings in the lives of true blue collar workers - folks the world always seems ready to write off and forget - as well as tales of hostile alien worlds, where creeping red fungus drives men to madness, and even some stories depicting the simple insanities of living an unfulfilling domestic life. In short there is likely to be "A horror story for everyone…", and it could well be that 'Westside Fairytales' have written a horror story for you. Not you, as in the broad sense, where you just means anybody, but you, the listener. They can do this, because they know all about you. What makes you nervous, what makes you sick with anxiety, what keeps you from leaving your house sometimes for the maddening worry of it. And put it in a story they’ll read for you now! :-O

What's The Frequency?: is a psychedelic noir audio drama podcast, created & written by James Oliva and produced by Alexander Danner, with music composed by Kurt C. Nelson, which is set in 1940's Los Angeles. Recently radio broadcasts in the city have been reduced to static, leaving a popular radio serial as the only remaining show on the air. Even then, the show finds itself continuously interrupted by a mysterious broadcast. A lone distorted voice reaching out for help. Follow Walter “Troubles” Mix and his partner Whitney as they search for a missing writer and navigate through a city quickly falling into madness. Could the mysterious voice be the culprit? Will anyone be able to stop the madness from spreading? And… What’s The Frequency? :-O Ask Kenneth, old chum! ;-) :-)

The White Vault: is an audio drama podcast series which could be considered as an "Arctic Horror" story, since it explores the far reaches of the world's horrors, by following the collected records of a repair team who were sent to 'Outpost Fristed' in the vast white snow (and ice) covered wastelands of the Arctic Circle. Listen-in as they unravel the truth as to what lies waiting in the ice below! :-O ;-) :-)

White-Noise Podcast: is a collaborative podcast about a girl named Sarah Jones, an average teenager who was a bit of recluse around her small home in Gettysburg Pennsylvania until, on one strange day, she discovers that she has died. She then has to solve her murder and do a few extra deeds before she can pass on. Though she doesn't do it alone, for she is accompanied by a Confederate soldier named Sam Dickerson, and Stella Smith, a ghost from the 80's. Along the way, Sarah is introduced to 'Death' and Death's assistants, who have the answer as to why she is still lingering on this mortal coil. There are also cameo appearances from several historical figures, in addition to little informative essays on various topics, by way of "intermission" segments to the main narrative that add further interest! :-D

DISCLAIMER: We at Bad Mitten Studios do not condone racism or support the Confederate movement. We however found "White-Noise" to be a unique opportunity to tell a story and express multiple complex ideas. These ideas are sometimes contradictory to history, but were written into the story to preserve character, or offer an opportunity for character bonds and development to occur. If we have offended anyone, in anyway, we apologise.

The Wicked Library: is a 'Parsec' award-winning horror anthology podcast series, which is produced by 9th Story Studios, that features horror fiction stories followed by interviews from upcoming, new, independent and bestselling authors. Their tales of terror are read by Host / Producer, Daniel Foytik, and other popular voice actors while featuring custom music to further bring the stories to life. Each episode includes voice work by some of the best voice-actors from horror fiction circles. Authors of all types have contributed stories, like: Jessica McHugh, KB Goddard, C. Bryan Brown, Stephanie Wytovich, along with bestselling authors Neil Gaiman and Owl Goingback. That said, the emphasis is definitely on "indie" horror authors so, if you'd like to be featured on their show, pay a visit to their website (see link below) for submission guidelines... and we may soon be listening to your story! :-D

Witch Finger: is a monthly horror podcast, produced by Yasmina Ketita, Megan Stinson and Morgan Lander, wherein these three (self-acclaimed) witches "drink, laugh, belch and discuss their favourite 80's horror films", to share their horror infatuation with the rest of the world as well as contribute and be a part of the wider horror community. The girls of 'Witch Finger' live and breathe the horror genre and use the podcast medium to bring their insight & musings to the masses. They're especially drawn to the groundbreaking special effects, and often outrageous plots, of the 80's... expressing humour and admiration for the ingenious ways those writers and directors were able to channel mankind's greatest fears (and craziest nightmares) to entertain us... though, it could be argued, these girls do the same! ;-)

Within The Wires: is a podcast series, written by Jeffrey Cranor and Janina Matthewson, that features various stories told through "found audio" from an alternate universe. Narrated by Mona Grenne, and with original music by Mary Epworth, this production (from the team behind Welcome to Night Vale) wields it's creepiness in the form of deep relaxation techniques. Initially styled as guided meditation, 'Within The Wires' then quickly turns dark as it's soothing narrator becomes more & more aggressive; providing tension-relieving exercises that are more than a little disturbing and dropping clues about a futuristic dystopian society. As the layers peel away, the narrative starts to feel like "Stranger Things" meets "Children of Men", but the gaps in the story (left to your imagination) are truly spooky! :-O ;-)

Women In Caskets: is an horror podcast series in which a pair of Austin, TX horror fans pick apart the movies, television shows, games and everything else that scares us. Hosted by Jen Brown (whom you may know as a voice actor in "Red vs Blue", "RWBY" or "DC Universe Online"), along with Dawn Humphrey (horror fan, desk jockey and avid social media junkie) and neither one can wait to talk about horror! :-D In addition to discussing the latest up-and-coming horror delights, in all of it's many forms, 'Women In Caskets' also covers some of the wider-reaching themes that effect women in horror, from the ways hysteria is depicted, to the plight of the "Final Girls". Whatever their topic of discussion may be, you can expect to hear the most nerdy of knowledge, balanced with a warm and chatty style that feels like having your friends round for a night of popcorn and scary movies! ;-) :-)

Won't Stay Dead: is a podcast series dedicated to the freaky and gloriously trashy world of horror, cult and exploitation cinema. Join the three hosts (Iain Todd, David Hanna, and Paul Doran) as they wax lyrical, dissect and celebrate some of their favourite examples of subversive filmmaking. To add a little inebriation to the proceedings, throughout each episode they drink booze that is in some way linked (albeit tenuously) to the main feature. So, why not crack open "a cold one", put your feet up, and delve with them into the murky depths of cult and classic movies that just won't stay dead! ;-) :-D

Wooden Overcoats: is what can only be described as an horror podcast take on the British Sitcom, as it details the goings-on at a failing funeral parlour on a tiny island, located in the English Channel. It begins with 'Season One - Episode 1', when the inappropriately named Rudyard Funn, and his equally miserable sister Antigone, notice the townsfolk are starting to prefer the services of a new competitor in the funeral trade - the impossibly perfect Eric Chapman! :-D With their dogsbody Georgie, and a mouse called Madeleine, the Funns must now take drastic steps to stay in the business…! :-O ;-) :-)

Anyhow, that's all there is for today... but do remember to come back again tomorrow, for my next batch of petrifying podcast recommendations, when I will provide some more links to further audio "treats", only next time they'll be titles that begin with the letter 'X' of the (horror) alphabet, for 'Day Twenty-Four' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku". Once again you'll be able to listen to them all through one of the various channels on your Roku streaming media player(s) which were outlined in my 'Special Hallowe'en Blogathon Preview' post, that was published on the last day of September. Meanwhile... please be sure to visit the "Countdown To Hallowe'en" website and show your support for this annual online Hallowe'en extravaganza PLUS don't forget to use the links you find there and check out all the other 'Cryptkeepers' taking part this year. I know they'll appreciate it, if you visit their blogs and share your thoughts on the contribution(s) they've made! ;-) :-D

*********************************************

ONE LAST THING, BEFORE I GO: Don't forget that, aside from the Hallowe'en / Horror-themed ghastliness going on around these parts for the next month, you can also keep up with the UK Roku action (as it happens) by checking-out my regular 'Weekly RoundUp' posts each weekend where you will find up-to-the-minute info on all things Roku-related is posted on a weekly basis (well, almost).

Until the next time, then...

That's all folks !!
