Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts On Roku - Day 21: Horror Series Beginning With The Letter 'U' !!

Greetings, Boils & Ghouls...

... and welcome to 'Day Twenty-One' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku" where I aim to bring you another batch of Hallowe'en / Horror-related audio series from the plethora of petrifying podcasts that have been released in recent years - any of which can be streamed to your TV via the magic of Roku media players - so, let's dim those lights... for some more audio frights! :-O

If you read my special hallowe'en blogathon preview - FOUND HERE - that I published twenty-one days ago, then you'll know I plan to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article each day, throughout the month of October, featuring an assortment of links to various podcasts beginning with the same letter of the alphabet every day of the month. For the sake of simplicity, I decided to begin this series of blog posts with the letter 'A' on 'Day One', followed by letter 'B' on 'Day Two', letter 'C' on 'Day Three', and so on and so forth, right the way through to letter 'Z' on 'Day Twenty-Six'. Obviously that will still leave five more days worth of posts, by the time we reach the end of the alphabet, so I'll put my thinking cap on (between now & then) to (hopefully) come up with some extra audio "treats" for you by then. With thirty-one posts of the most spook-tacular sounding series I can find, between now and the end of the month, you'll have lots of great choice for your listening pleasure as we count the days to Hallowe'en, as well as plenty of spine-tingling thrills & chills 'twixt now and All Hallows' Eve on October 31st! :-D

For my twenty-first post in this series I'm going to share links for a (slightly) lower amount of audio "treats" than there were yesterday, but (again) they'll all be from the general spectrum of horror and the paranormal, with the unifying "trick" (sic) being that the title for each of these podcast series will begin with the letter 'U' - and (for once) there's no need for me to claim "artistic licence" over the use of the definite article "The", at the start of the title, as I have been doing with all of my previous posts in this month-long blogathon... purely, and simply, because none of the featured podcasts begin with it! :-D So, with that small detail now cleared-up, here's my next list of Hallowe'en / Horror-related podcast series... the titles for which all begin with letter 'U' of the (horror) alphabet:-

Uncanny County: is a quirky, darkly comic, Southwestern-flavoured, indie horror anthology podcast series which presents a new paranormal audio play, every month... all based upon strange tales of the Southwestern United States. Created by Todd Faulkner and Alison Crane, this indie anthology audio drama series features tales of mystical truck drivers, robots gone haywire, killer clown demons, and pie! So. Much. Pie! :-P :-D As the "Winner" of 4 'Parsec' Awards, as well as 10 'Audio Verse' Awards, along with having 400+ (mostly 5/5) reviews on 'Apple Podcasts', it's another of those audio drama series that you really should not miss. So, sit back, open your ears, and hold on tight... because you're about to take a quick detour - through 'Uncanny County'! :-O ;-) :-D

Under The Shroud: is a 'Noir' / 'Horror' podcast, created by Ian Humphrey, which is set in Baltimore's "Extra-Natural" underbelly. The series tracks the life of 'Corin Black', a junkie, half-demon cab driver who taxis creatures of the night through the sin-soaked streets of Baltimore. As he chauffeurs goblins, nationalists, and even worse monsters, we hear tales of the marginalised - which are a bit like fantasy, only from the street level - and the experience is akin to how "Alice isn't Dead" (from 'Day One' of this month-long blogathon) might have sounded if James Ellroy held the reins. To quote the words of the podcast: "Supernatural? We're not super anything. Just a little... extra!", at least according to the hapless, but humble, half-demon cabbie. So, if that's enough to grab your attention, then why not hop in the cab with Corin... and see where "Charm City" takes you! ;-) :-D

Unexplained: is a haunting, unsettling, bi-weekly podcast, produced (and hosted) by Richard McLean Smith, about strange & mysterious real life events that continue to defy explanation. A story-based show mixing spoken-word narrative, history and ideas - often to terrifying effect - which explores the space between what we think of as real, and what is not; where sometimes belief can be as concrete as ‘reality’ - whatever that is...? :-) So, while there's no "satisfying" (i.e. 100% nailed-down) answers here, there is plenty of discussion about all kinds of unexplained (du-uh!) phenomena. It's also pretty clear the host has done his homework, when it comes to how and where the paranormal crosses-over with the more radical ideas in science. If nothing else, it will leave you wondering "What if?"! :-O ;-)

Unobscured: is a relatively new serial storytelling podcast, from the mind of Lore's Aaron Mahnke. The main difference is that, while 'Lore' (as featured on 'Day Twelve' of this month-long blogathon) focuses on a couple of different tales for each episode, the idea behind 'Unobscured' is to deep-dive into a specific subject (via multiple, serialised episodes) over the course of each season. History is full of stories we think we know. They are old and dark... but time has robbed us of perspective, and clarity. They've become obscured and misunderstood. Which is why this series exists: to dig deep and shed light on some of history’s darkest moments. To help us better understand where we have come from. To make it 'Unobscured'! ;-) For 'Season One', they cover the the 'Salem Witch Trials' and, if you're at all interested in this particularly dark (and strange) part of history (as I am), then you are sure to love this extremely detailed slow burner! :-) Others may prefer 'Season Two' of 'Unexplained', the subject matter for which is 'Spiritualism' and (once again) it pairs the narrative storytelling of host Aaron Mahnke with interviews that feature prominent historians. Expect (many) more to follow! :-D

Unsolved Murders - True Crime Stories: is a podcast drama, with Carter Roy and Wenndy Mackenzie as the narrators, which puts a modern twist on Old Time Radio (OTR) as it delves into the mystery of true cold cases and unsolved murders. With the help of an ensemble cast, follow the hosts as they take you on an entertaining journey through every crime scene, plus the corresponding investigations, and attempt to solve each case. So if you enjoy 'True Crime', but dislike having just one person do a summary of any given storyline, then 'Unsolved Murders: True Crime Stories' may provide you with the alternative you've been looking for... since they actually get actors to play-out specifically written scenes which are created from the actual case stories. With many surprising plot twists, it’s important to start listening from the first episode of a cold case. New episodes tend to be released each Tuesday but, because of how in-depth every story goes, they are often two-parters. Obviously this is not such an issue when you're binging older (already archived) episodes of the show... but it's something to bear in mind once you're all caught-up and having to wait for the next one to finish the current story. 'Unsolved Murders: True Crime Stories' is a 'Cutler Media' production, and part of 'Parcast Network', so although (to some) it may come across like a cheesy OTR show... it's a well-produced one! ;-) :-D

Unwell: is a 'Midwestern Gothic Mystery' fictional podcast series set in the town of Mt. Absalom, Ohio, which involves conspiracies, ghosts, and the unusual families of blood and choice that evolve together as a matter of circumstance. It's another audio drama from 'HartLife NFP', creators of the critically-acclaimed fiction podcast "Our Fair City", and blends 'genre' as much as it's characters are heard to blend truth and lies. The story centres around a woman, by the name of Lillian Harper, who returns to her hometown to care for her estranged mother Dorothy (after she suffers an injury) only to find things aren’t quite as she remembered. Living in the town's boarding house, which has been run by her family for generations, she discovers a new "family" in the strange assortment of residents. In addition to the town's troubled history, her mother's house makes troubling noises, which may (or may not) stem from the afore-mentioned ghosts, yet the townspeople remain troublingly un-troubled! Described elsewhere online as "One part 'Twin Peaks', one part 'Pleasantville', and two parts 'A Rose for Emily'," it's certainly one of the more surreal & unusual podcast series in the realm of horror! :-)

Anyhow, that's all there is for today... but do remember to come back again tomorrow, for my next batch of petrifying podcast recommendations, when I will provide some more links to further audio "treats", only next time they'll be titles that begin with the letter 'V' of the (horror) alphabet, for 'Day Twenty-Two' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku".
