Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts On Roku - Day 01: Horror Series Beginning With The Letter 'A' !!

Greetings, Boils & Ghouls...

... and welcome to 'Day One' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku" where I aim to bring you the first batch of Hallowe'en / Horror-related audio series from the plethora of petrifying podcasts that have been released in recent years - any of which can be streamed to your TV via the magic of Roku media players - so, let's dim down those lights... for some audio frights! :-O ;-)

If you read my special hallowe'en blogathon preview - FOUND HERE - which I published yesterday, then you'll know that I plan to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article every day, throughout the month of October, featuring an assortment of links to various podcasts that begin with the same letter of the alphabet each and every day. For the sake of simplicity, I decided to begin this series of blog posts with the letter 'A' on 'Day One', followed by letter 'B' on 'Day Two', letter 'C' on 'Day Three', and so on and so forth, right the way through to letter 'Z' on 'Day Twenty-Six'. Obviously that will still leave five more days worth of posts, by the time we reach the end of the alphabet, so I'll put my thinking cap on (between now & then) to (hopefully) come up with some extra audio "treats" for you by then. With thirty-one posts of the most spook-tacular sounding series I can find, between now and the end of the month, you'll have lots of great choice for your listening pleasure as we count the days to Hallowe'en, as well as plenty of spine-tingling thrills & chills 'twixt now and All Hallows' Eve on October 31st! :-D

To get things started I'm going to ease us all in gently by sharing some links to a small selection of audio "treats" in the form of various podcasts, covering the spectrum of horror and the paranormal, with the unifying "trick" (sic) that the title for each of these podcast series begins with the letter 'A' - although some artistic licence has been taken to ignore "The", when used at the start of the title, so as to avoid having to post too many links for letter 'T' on 'Day Twenty' of this month-long blogathon. So, without further ado, here are my suggestions for Hallowe'en / Horror-related podcast series... the titles for which all begin with the letter 'A' of the (horror) alphabet:-

Age of Enfrightenment: Earth has become a much smaller place. The mysteries of our planet are being slowly killed by the march of progress. Yet fear remains a constant of the human condition. It is the most basic of our emotions. It is what ties us all together and perpetually tears us apart. And we find fear fascinating. Twice a month the Age of Enfrightenment podcast sheds some light on the dark corners of the world and investigates the things that keep us up at night. Join them as they examine mysteries of the past, urban legends, and the anxieties of an ever-looming and unknowable future... discussing bizarre & macabre literature, and cinema, plus their role in society. If you have a passion for the eerie, the esoteric, and the extraordinary, it's all here. Welcome to the Age of Enfrightenment!

Alice Isn't Dead: A serialised story of an un-named (to us at least) truck driver and the country-wide search for her missing wife, the titular Alice. The main story is tragic, eerie, and a wonderful jumping off point for all manner of paranormal spooks. Along the way she encounters all kinds of ghostly weirdness along with numerous otherworldly entities. While 'Night Vale' was it's own phenomenon, 'Alice Isn’t Dead' stands out for it's overall tone and the evocative, lyrical writing. It’s what helped sustain it for three seasons, and led to the recently released Alice Isn’t Dead novel, plus a TV deal!

FROM THE 'SYFY WIRE' WEBSITE: "Welcome to Night Vale" captured the hearts and minds of podcast fans everywhere, but this series presented by the 'Night Vale' network shouldn't be slept on. 'Alice Isn't Dead', written by 'Night Vale' co-creator Joseph Fink, is darker than it's predecessor and often feels more like a novel, but it's no less gripping as a result. The Lynchian influences are obvious and it has much of that same surreal humour, too, something that made 'Night Vale' a must-listen. It’s a story of the open road, and how something so dream-like as a life on the move, can yield very real horrors... as well as some more fantastical ones. 'Alice Isn't Dead' is best appreciated when you give it your utmost attention. Sit down, turn everything else off (except maybe the lights), curl up and listen!

Alone In The Dark Podcast: Hosts Michael Boylan, Tom Neff, and Matt Strippoli come together to produce a fairly entertaining podcast in which they discuss & review horror movies both old and new. Most episodes feature top five and top ten lists, as well as interviews. Their release schedule is a little spotty, considering they started in 2014, but they are all quite enjoyable... so, go check them out! ;-)

Anything Ghost: Another scary story podcast that's been plugging away for more than a decade. The format is similar to "Jim Harold’s Campfire", in which viewers share their own real-life scary stories. Most are read by long-time host, Lex Wahl, but sometimes viewers call in to share their own tales... others are told by those who actually encountered the paranormal first-hand, and then sent in an audio file, instead. Wahl cultivates a judgement-free environment for his listeners to share their tales and keeps his own commentary to a minimum throughout the show. The podcast has been said to share the synergy of "Jim Harold’s Campfire" with it's scary stories, and the crowd-sourcing of "real-life" horror. Host Lex Wahl creates music & effects to bring all accounts of the supernatural (experienced and sent in by listeners) to life. While the music may seem dramatic in places, it could also leave you feeling genuinely unsettled, if you listen to it long enough. The 'Anything Ghost' podcast doesn’t cleanly fall under the label of "fictional" because the stories told are purported to be true; however, it isn’t "non-fiction" in the way that 'Lore' can claim to be: with unquestionable facts to educate it's listeners. If you’re a believer in ghosts and ghouls, this podcast will probably send a chill up your spine... and, if you’re the kind of person who prefers ghost stories about actual experiences, over works of fiction, 'Anything Ghost' is definitely the podcast for you! :-D

The Apex & The Abyss: A True Crime Horror Podcast that focuses on "the true stories behind what keeps you awake at night and afraid of the dark", and one which dives into each case with the sole purpose to tell the stories of those we have lost. These aural bursts of murder and mayhem are pleasing, though often frightfully short. On the plus side, having such brevity makes it the perfect horror podcast for binging, like when you're alone in a hotel with nothing on television except another marathon of 'Forensic Files' or some such crime fodder. Although one (slight) criticism is that the lack of dramatic pacing can (occasionally) limit the impact of these grisly tales.

Archive 81: Archive 81 bills itself as a “found footage horror podcast,” and that’s a pretty apt description. It opens with recordings made by Dan Powell, an archivist at the Housing Historical Committee of New York State who is trying to make sense of some audio interviews that were recorded decades earlier: "A few weeks ago, my friend Daniel Powell disappeared. Before he vanished, he sent me hours and hours of audio he'd collected while working as an archivist for the HHCNYS. The tapes are... strange". There's a lot of missing people in scary podcasts, and this one is no exception, so (provided you can keep track of everything) expect plenty of un-nerving fun! :-D

Astonishing Legends: Scott and Forrest have been called the 'Click and Clack of esoterica' by their listeners. Put your headphones on, settle in for your commute and get ready to experience a show like nothing you've ever heard before. Anyhow, that's all I've got time for today... but do remember to come back again tomorrow, for my next batch of petrifying podcast recommendations, when I will provide even more links to further audio "treats", only next time they'll all be titles that begin with the letter 'B' of the (horror) alphabet, for 'Day Two' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku". Once again you will be able to listen to them all through one of the various channels on your Roku streaming media player(s) which were outlined in my 'Special Hallowe'en Blogathon Preview' post, that was published on the last day of September. Meanwhile... please be sure to visit the "Countdown To Hallowe'en" website and show your support for this annual online Hallowe'en extravaganza PLUS don't forget to use the links you find there and check out all the other 'Cryptkeepers' taking part this year. I know they'll appreciate it, if you visit their blogs and share your thoughts on the contribution(s) they've made! ;-) :-D

ONE LAST THING, BEFORE I GO: Don't forget that, aside from the Hallowe'en / Horror-themed ghastliness going on around these parts for the next month, you can also keep up with the UK Roku action (as it happens) by checking-out my regular 'Weekly RoundUp' posts each weekend where you will find up-to-the-minute info on all things Roku-related is posted on a weekly basis (well, almost).
