Greetings, Boils & Ghouls...
... and welcome to 'Day Thirteen' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku" where I aim to bring you another batch of Hallowe'en / Horror-related audio series from the plethora of petrifying podcasts that have been released in recent years - any of which can be streamed to your TV via the magic of Roku media players - so, let's dim down those lights... for more audio frights! :-O ;-) :-D
If you read my special hallowe'en blogathon preview - FOUND HERE - that I published thirteen days ago, then you'll know I plan to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article every day, throughout the month of October, featuring an assortment of links to various podcasts beginning with the same letter of the alphabet each and every day. For the sake of simplicity, I decided to begin this series of blog posts with the letter 'A' on 'Day One', followed by letter 'B' on 'Day Two', letter 'C' on 'Day Three', and so on and so forth, right the way through to letter 'Z' on 'Day Twenty-Six'. Obviously that will still leave five more days worth of posts, by the time we reach the end of the alphabet, so I'll put my thinking cap on (between now & then) to (hopefully) come up with some extra audio "treats" for you by then. With thirty-one posts of the most spook-tacular sounding series I can find, between now and the end of the month, you'll have lots of great choice for your listening pleasure as we count the days to Hallowe'en, as well as plenty of spine-tingling thrills & chills 'twixt now and All Hallows' Eve on October 31st! :-D
For my thirteenth post in this series I'm going to share links to an even larger amount of audio "treats" than there were yesterday, but (again) they will all be from the general spectrum of horror and the paranormal, and the unifying "trick" (sic) is that the title for each of these podcast series begins with the letter 'M' - although some artistic licence has been taken to ignore "The", when used at the start of the title, so as to avoid having to post too many links for letter 'T' on 'Day Twenty' of this month-long blogathon. So, without further ado, here are my suggestions for Hallowe'en / Horror-related podcast series... the titles for which all begin with the letter 'M' of the (horror) alphabet:-
Mabel: is a horror, folklore, weird-fiction podcast regarding a series of phone messages sent between the main characters. It was created and produced by Becca De La Rose and Mabel Martin. It centres around a home health carer for a secretive old woman who tries to get in contact with her client's estranged granddaughter. Featuring: ghosts, family secrets, strange houses, even stranger occurrences, as well as memories, and missed connections, The Past, and leave a lingering sense of unease! :-O

The Magnus Archives: is a horror podcast series, produced by The Rusty Quill, which features guest actors, short stories, serial plots and more. The series casts a macabre shadow, and there is an arc within the featured short stories from each episode. Starting in 2016, this anthology series follows Jonathan Sims, who purports to be an archivist for The Magnus Institute. The group catalogs accounts of the disturbing and the supernatural, and over the course of the podcast Sims, and other cast members, read the accounts found in the Institute’s archives as a sort of audio permanent record. Sims’ crisp voice, and the largely minimalist production, lend the stories an eerie, creeping dread that speaks to just how powerful a well-acted tale can truly be. The Magnus Archives podcast sounds like a radio confessional, where a skeptical host prompts the caller to reveal their deepest fear. It works. The timely use of sound effects heightens the dread, as does the slick production and professional voice acting. It's a great podcast if you love learning about what gives others the creepy-crawlies and you can count on there being a new episode every week - usually uploaded on a Thursday! ;-) :-D

The Message: is another podcast from GE Podcast Theater and Panoply, that takes listeners on a journey to the limits of technology. Written by Mac Rogers, who is also responsible for the 'LifeAfter' podcast series which featured in yesterday's post, 'The Message' podcast series chronicles the efforts of a team of experts as they try to crack an intelligent signal, containing the titular message, thought to be an alien transmission, and one that has been puzzling code-breakers for decades. Nicky Tomlan is the host of 'Native Tongue', a podcast that focuses on the nature of linguistics. That changes once she finds out about Cypher, a firm hired by the NSA to decode a verified extraterrestrial signal from outer space. Through sheer force of will, she lands herself exclusive rights to report on the team’s discoveries. However, the message was originally received in 1945 and no-one has ever come close to breaking it. Add a hostile research team and rumours that the message is cursed, and it starts to look like maybe Nicky’s golden opportunity isn’t so shiny after all. Undeterred, Nicky posts week-by-week updates on their progress... but it soon becomes apparent that this is an urgent puzzle with life or death consequences! :-O This podcast is great if you like more alien-centric sci-fi with the entire series spanning only 8 episodes in total and, at just 10 – 20 minutes each, you can easily listen to the entirety of this gripping, modern-day War of the Worlds in a single morning. :-)

The Modern Horrors Podcast Network: is a fun, fast-paced, content packed, and sometimes factually accurate series of episodes in which the hosts discuss news of the week, review movies, and construct alcohol-infused "games" that often lead to tears of joy, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. Unlike some of the other horror podcasts available, which can border on being corny, The Modern Horror Podcast Network claim they are here "...to provide you with horror shows like no other". However... they also mention the inevitability of hi-jinx in their shows and, as a result, provide an additional warning for all would-be listeners to consult a physician before subscribing to their podcast! :-P ;-) :-)

Monster Porn Podcast: is a fun new weird-fiction horror podcast series. It takes a different approach to most podcasts. The introduction provides a loose idea of the plot - think 'Tales From the Crypt', or 'Mystery Science Theater', - with each episode offering a dark, strange, or... dark and strange tale. It's an anthology series, so there's a completely new story every other week, and the stories are diverse. Creators Matt Cummins and Bret Norwood present your creature fix in podcast form, covering pretty much everything from weird fiction, to bizarro fiction, and speculative fiction in this anthology series of horror stories. Essentially, if you want monsters, they've got monsters... this is a place where every day is like Halloween (and Prom Night!) - so, prepare to get weird! ;-) :-D

MonsterTalk: is a podcast series that breaks down the history and such-like about monsters, plus other paranormal / spooky things. It's a show which until August 2019, when it split and went it's own way, was presented by the Skeptics Society's "Skeptic" magazine. It critically examines the science behind crypto-zoological creatures, such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and werewolves. The show is hosted by Blake Smith, who also produces the series, along with co-host Karen Stollznow. This series has been promoting science and critical thinking since 2009. They use monsters as a springboard to talk about a variety of monster topics. They’re skeptical of the existence of monsters, but want to understand the mysterious experiences people report. The Mountain: First-off... if you're wondering why the above image has the word "Nightmare" across the top of it, when the name of this podcast is "The Mountain", the reason is that the story (written by Kaaron Warren) was featured as part of 'Nightmare Magazine' (Issue #32) - published in May 2015 - and, given how this podcast was a direct result of that, I decided to use (part of) the front cover from that issue to represent it for the purposes of this post. The fact that the podcast wing of the magazine, 'Nightmare', shares (half of) the same name as the horror anthology publication also seemed to fit my needs rather well... so, there you have it! :-) As for the individual recordings by 'Nightmare' podcasts, each episode features one of the published short stories (originally featured in the magazine) which is read by a professional narrator. In this case, Kaaron Warren’s tale is narrated by Gabriele de Cuir who does a terrific job with this spooky story that combines traditionally chilling ghost story elements with the issues of human greed and domestic violence. Not only is it scary, but it’s also extremely thought provoking. With a cleverly executed narrative, which runs for just over twenty-five minutes, it's perfect listening for when time is tight... just (maybe?) not last thing at night! :-O ;-) :-D

Online [Direct Link to 'MP3' File]
PLEASE NOTE:- That, unless somebody can clarify otherwise, the only source for listening to this recording of 'The Mountain' is via the 'Nightmare Magazine' website. However, if you wish to play it on your Roku device, simply click on the above link marked 'Online' to be taken to a webpage which has an 'mp3' file [RUN TIME: 26m 58s] that can either be used as a source URL for direct playback through various Roku channels (apps) which support it (e.g. Roku Media Player, Plex, etc.), or as a means of downloading the audio file (in 'mp3' format) to play using DLNA, via your home network. Since it is *not* an episodic series of podcasts but, rather, a single short story... I'm not even certain whether the usual podcast apps (with our without a compatible Roku channel of their own) would even make this recording available - although 'Nightmare' may wish to consider this, as part of some podcast archive for all of the recordings they have undertaken - so, for now, this is the best way I can suggest for listening to it on your Roku device(s). Granted, it's not as easy (or straightforward) as the other recommendations in this series of posts, which are more readily available, but since I liked this so much, I decided to share it anyway... and hope you also get to enjoy it, one way or another! ;-) :-D

Any reader of "Dread Central" should be aware of this podcast already, considering their very own 'Uncle Creepy' has been a guest on the show. Moya: is a horror fiction podcast, written and produced by Ben Cutmore. A murder investigation should be simple enough, but things are not always as they seem. In the people's republic of Moya, Agent Nevin is assigned to the outer sectors to help investigate a double homicide. However… these things are seldom straight-forward in Moya. First there's the bodies, and the nature of the killings… then there's all the strange tales that surround the place! :-O ;-) :-)

MPIR Old Time Radio: is a series of Old Time Radio (OTR) shows from the 30's 40's and 50's, that are spread across various genres - including Horror, Sci-fi, Crime, and Mystery - which were brought back to life by OTR archivist, C.J. MrCreepyPasta's Storytime: is a podcast series from Mr. Creepy Pasta, bringing 'creepypasta' stories from the deep dark stones of the crypt, right to the "ear balls" in your head. If (like me) you enjoy a good story of terror and fear, hide under your blanket, and prepare yourself for some sweet screams! Each episode features some of the most horrifying (and occasionally funny) horror stories, otherwise known as "Creepypasta's", the internet has to offer... all narrated by 'The Blue Man' himself. There's no "official" website, per se, so the podcast is taken directly from the 'YouTube' channel of the same name, where Mr. Creepy Pasta is always open to suggestions for new stories and submissions! :-D

My Favorite Murder: is the perfect podcast series for those of you who like a side of humour with your true crime. If you can imagine the radio show "Prairie Home Companion" as a horror podcast, then this would be it. There's also a popular live show that complements this podcast… but, be aware, tickets are hard to come by! That aside, 'My Favorite Murder' is a popular horror comedy podcast, by 'Exactly Right Media', with an emphasis on true crime and gal-pal hilarity. Those that like it, will love it! As lifelong fans of true crime stories, hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark are wonderfully expressive, and there's a great rapport between them, which fosters a strong connection with the listeners. In addition to telling each other their favourite tales of murder, they hear hometown crime stories from some of their friends and fans. However... bear in mind that much of the content isn't particularly dark, scary, or horrifying… and sometimes, dare I say it, not even all that funny. That said, they also touch upon real-life problems such as mental health and anxiety… neither of which is a laughing matter! :-| All things considered, the best way to gauge the overall appeal of the show, is to think of this podcast as being like a horror fun house: in so much as, while some rooms aren't very scary, they're still a necessary part of the overall journey - if you wish to get to the end, that is! ;-) :-D

My Neighbors Are Dead: is an improv-comedy / horror podcast, which is produced by Nate Duffort / Campfire Media, that features interviews with many lesser-known characters from some of the most famous horror films. The podcast includes characters from classic horror films like The Shining, Friday the 13th, The Omen, and The Ring, with each of them being interviewed by the show's host: Adam Peacock. Episodes include discussions with counsellors from the Christian camp across the lake from Camp Crystal Lake, Hannibal Lector’s lonely/obsessive next-door neighbour, and the very exasperated English teacher of Reagan (from The Exorcist) who just wants his other students to stop claiming demonic / supernatural possession as an excuse to skip tests and gym class! :-D

Mysterious Universe: is a paranormal podcast turned paranormal media empire. Founded by Aussies Benjamin Grundy and Aaron Wright back in 2006, the podcast portion of the media entity brings you a clear-headed, yet still excited examination of the paranormal. Hosts, Wright and Grundy, view the paranormal through as scientific a lens as possible. The events and creatures they cover are all treated with the utmost sincerity. If "the truth" really is "out there", like Fox Mulder once said, then of all the many "seekers" there are in the world, 'Mysterious Universe' is the podcast most likely to find out! :-)

Mystery Show: is described simply as, “A podcast where Starlee Kline solves mysteries”; you can submit mysteries in your life you’d like solved, as long as they follow one rule - “Your mystery can’t be found by just Googling.” It may not be spooky… but it's often something pretty fantastic. The only (slight) criticism I have is that the narrator's voice may not be to everybody's liking… and if you do feel that it's a little, shall we say, grating - then you'll likely find it impossible to listen to this podcast. However if you can get past that, or it's not something that bothers you in the slightest, then this is both an unique and enjoyable experience. Put simply... if you enjoy a little bit of "armchair detective" work, then there's a good chance this 'Mystery Show' podcast series will be right up your alley! ;-) :-)

Anyhow, that's all I've got time for today... but do remember to come back again tomorrow, for my next batch of petrifying podcast recommendations, when I will provide even more links to further audio "treats", only next time they'll be titles that begin with the letter 'N' of the (horror) alphabet, for 'Day Fourteen' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku". Once again you will be able to listen to them all through one of the various channels on your Roku streaming media player(s) which were outlined in my 'Special Hallowe'en Blogathon Preview' post, that was published on the last day of September. Meanwhile... please be sure to visit the "Countdown To Hallowe'en" website and show your support for this annual online Hallowe'en extravaganza PLUS don't forget to use the links you find there and check out all the other 'Cryptkeepers' taking part this year. I know they'll appreciate it, if you visit their blogs and share your thoughts on the contribution(s) they've made! ;-) :-D
ONE LAST THING, BEFORE I GO: Don't forget that, aside from the Hallowe'en / Horror-themed ghastliness going on around these parts for the next month, you can also keep up with the UK Roku action (as it happens) by checking-out my regular 'Weekly RoundUp' posts each weekend where you will find up-to-the-minute info on all things Roku-related is posted on a weekly basis (well, almost).
Until the next time, then...
That's all folks !!
