Hi, everyone !!
With such a vast number of new channels last week, you could easily have expected the numbers to be lower this time but, instead, we've had ANOTHER HUGE CROP OF NEW CHANNELS to boost the UK Channel Store total. To wit, no less than NINETY-EIGHT NEW ROKU APPS have been added to the already vast selection of over six thousand three hundred apps which populated the channel store as of this time last week. This means we've now been blessed with almost twelve hundred new apps, during a period of just twelve weeks, any of which UK Roku owners can add to the individual selection of apps installed on their device(s). As if that wasn't enough, there's also several items of streaming-related news for me to report on so, without further delay, here goes...
As there's no Roku-specific news from the past seven days, let's begin with details of an agreement between 'Sky' and 'BBC Studios' to bring a new range of 'BBC' comedy and drama box sets to both 'Sky' and 'NOW TV' customers... which, in turn, means they'll also be available to UK Roku users. The deal means that, from April 2019, there will be box sets of iconic British brands including top comedy series like "Only Fools and Horses" plus "The Vicar of Dibley", as well as more recent hits such as "McMafia" and "Spooks", along with other popular shows (Absolutely Fabulous, Blackadder, The Royle Family, Little Britain, Open All Hours, The Young Ones, Keeping Up Appearances, Red Dwarf, Extras, and more) bringing hours and hours of binge-worthy content to stream on Roku! :-D
From what I've read, further box sets will be added later in the year... with some of the more notable titles being: The Last Post, Father Brown, QI, Top Gear, The League of Gentlemen, Ashes to Ashes and Brian Cox’s Wonder series. Anyone wishing to know more about the range of comedy & drama series that are coming to the Roku platform in the UK - courtesy of the 'NOW TV' service - will find additional information in a related news article - published via the 'Digital TV Europe' website - that also includes further comment from both Rob Webster (Group Director of Partner Channels, Sky) and Marcus Arthur (President, UK & ANZ, BBC Studios) on this latest content collaboration.
In other 'BBC' news, which came my way - via press release - on Tuesday 19th March 2019, it was revealed that a new four-year broadcast deal has been agreed with The Football Association (The FA) to show coverage of The Emirates FA Cup competitions, beginning with the 2021/22 season, lasting right through until 2025. According to the announcement, their coverage of the world's most famous domestic cup competition will feature not only live matches, but also highlights and clips rights... all of which are going to be made available Free-To-Air (FTA) by the 'BBC' across multiple platforms - not least, from this writer's perspective, will be the ability to stream everything on Roku!
The new deal will have more Emirates FA Cup matches than ever before on the BBC, with up to 18 live matches across the competition per season. It also includes greater coverage of the early rounds - with up to six live matches from across the First and Second Rounds. Commenting on the new deal,
Mark Bullingham (Chief Commercial & Football Development Officer, The FA), had this to say:
"The Emirates FA Cup is the best, most historic, domestic cup competition in the world and we're delighted to have agreed a long-term commitment to keep it on BBC till 2025"
With so much live sport these days being put behind a pay-wall, which puts it out-of-reach for many of the lower income households, it is great to learn that the 'BBC' have secured these FA Cup rights until the 2024/25 season, ensuring the millions can tune into these free-to-air broadcasts and continue to enjoy this famous domestic cup competition... including those with Roku devices in the UK! ;-) :-)
While we're on the subject of football, the next Roku-related news story that I have to share with you concerns details of an announcement from 'Amazon UK' to the effect that, when they begin streaming their live coverage of the 'Premier League' via 'Prime Video' in December 2019, they will be working with 'BT Sport' and 'Sunset+Vine' to support production of studio & live action match-day coverage. This info came my way courtesy of a recent news article published via the 'TVB Europe' website.
For those of you who may not yet be aware... Amazon won the broadcast rights for two full fixture rounds: the first December mid-week round and the Boxing Day round, which are set to feature live coverage of every Premier League team. It will be the first time that a full round of 'Premier League' fixtures are broadcast live in the UK and those of us with 'Prime Video' subscriptions will be able to take our pick of the fixtures, then stream all of the action *live* on our Roku devices in the UK! :-D
In other 'Amazon' news, following a successful premiere of the second season, 'Prime Video' has now confirmed that there will be a third season of the hit 'Prime Original' series "American Gods", based on the best-selling novel of the same name by award-winning author, Neil Gaiman. Of course, with season two having only just kicked-off, it will still be a while before season three is available. That said, if you have yet to begin watching the series, all of season one from "American Gods" is still available now on 'Prime Video' and new episodes (from season two) will be released every Monday over the next seven weeks... so you can easily be caught-up before season three arrives! ;-) :-)
Starring Ricky Whittle (The 100, Nappily Ever After) as 'Shadow Moon' alongside Ian McShane (Deadwood, John Wick) as 'Mr. Wednesday', the 'Fremantle' series "American Gods" tells the story of a war brewing between the 'Old Gods' and the 'New Gods': traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. As their destinies collide with those of men, the battle between 'Old Gods' and 'New Gods' moves inexorably towards crisis point... but, from a viewer's perspective, it makes for gripping entertainment - so catch up while you can! ;-) :-)
Details about the series being renewed for a third season came my way via a recent news article that was published via the 'Advanced-Television' website on Monday 18th March 2019. Better yet, is the revelation that Charles 'Chic' Eglee (best known for his work on Hemlock Grove, The Walking Dead, Dexter and The Shield) will join the ‘god squad’ as show-runner for the upcoming third season! :-D
Moving on, from one major Subscription Video-on-Demand (SvoD) provider to another, it appears that 'Netflix' have begun "testing" prices increases across their various price plans for UK subscribers - most notably the 'Premium' tier (which includes Ultra HD and use of four screens at the same time) at a (current) cost of £9.99 per month - with people around the UK reporting that they've seen this same package advertised at various price points, including £10.99, £11.99, and even £12.99! :-O
In addition to the higher pricing which has been spotted on the 'Premium' tier, similar increases have also been reported across their 'Basic' and 'Standard' price plans. You'll find specific details about the "test price" for these in a related news article - published via the 'Trusted Reviews' website - online. According to a spokesperson for 'Netflix', these "tests" are being implemented "to determine how the service is valued" and the same source noted that it "does not necessarily mean Netflix will decide to permanently raise the prices" while also adding that "not everyone will see this test" before seemingly trying to reassure subscribers by stating "we may never roll out these specific prices beyond this test".
On a more positive note, in other 'Netflix' news from the last week, there was a new trailer released for the upcoming episodes in the "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" series... 'Part 2' of which will be launched globally on 'Netflix' from 5th April 2019 and finds Sabrina exploring her darker side, now curious to learn more about her heritage, while also struggling to maintain her friendships in the mortal world. To give you a better idea of what to expect, here is the afore-mentioned trailer:-
If you happen to have missed 'Part 1' of the series, then you are in luck... because all of the episodes are still available via 'Netflix UK' on both 'Roku' and 'NOW TV' devices, plus any other platform that has an app for the service. Just in case you're not familiar with the general plot for this 'Netflix' series, it re-imagines the origin and adventures of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" as a dark coming-of-age tale which blendsc elements of horror and the occult with (you guessed it...) witchcraft to great effect! :-)
For those who are already caught-up with the series and, like myself, eagerly awaiting the start of the next chapter(s) in the story... you can expect more of the unholy love triangle between 'Sabrina' and sexy warlock 'Nicholas Scratch' plus salt-of-the-earth mortal 'Harvey Kinkle' to be revealed as well as further chaos being conjured-up, both in the Spellman household and around the town of Greendale, by the likes of 'The Dark Lord', 'Madam Satan', and 'Father Blackwood' who continue to raise hell as only they can. When the devil's work is at hand, everything is in question... whether it's relationships, matters of personal identity, or general wariness about the true intentions of others - it's all there! :-D
Bringing things full-circle, and getting back to 'NOW TV' for a moment, there is both good and bad news for fans of the 'Sky Atlantic' series "Tin Star" - fronted by Tim Roth - in so much as, while they have agreed to renew the series for a third season, the report - published via the 'TV Wise' website - also confirms that it will be the last... with "Tin Star" coming to a close, once 'Season 3' is over! :-(
According to the 'TV Wise' article, the final season of "Tin Star" will consist of six episodes and is set to enter production later this year, with the premiere tentatively scheduled for some time in 2020. For those who may not be familiar with the series, created by Rowan Joffe, it tells the story of 'Jim Worth' - an ex-Metropolitan Police Detective - who has moved to the Rocky Mountains, with his family, to begin a new life as local Chief of Police in a seemingly idyllic rural community. I won't spoil things by revealing too much more of the plot - in case you haven't seen it - but, come the end of 'Season 2', the family’s dark history has caught-up with them and consequently the final season will be set back in (and around) Liverpool, where the Worth family are forced to confront their menacing past! :-O
Meanwhile, before I get into the current list of channels, I would just like to point-out that the issue of "missing" reviews from the 'Roku Guide' website appears to remain largely unresolved. Over the course of the last twelve weeks, my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts have seen a total of 1,184 new channels added. Meanwhile, the number of 'Roku Guide' reviews being published has continued to fall short of the mark during that time. Looking at all the articles they have published since the start of the year, there has been a total of only 371 new reviews added to their website. With a minimum of around another eighty-seven "missing" reviews from the last seven days they remain more than two-thirds shy of where they should be and, if it continues, there could be hundreds (if not thousands) more Roku channels with no corresponding independent review for me to provide a link from the relevant 'Weekly RoundUp' posts on my blog. I'm hoping this shortfall will be addressed soon because, as mentioned eight weeks ago, the current situation isn't good for anyone with a connection to the Roku platform: be they end-users, developers, bloggers like myself, or even Roku - whose platform provides the very source from which the 'Roku Guide' website generates their reviews! :-O
Still, back to the list... which, as always, will help you to identify the very latest apps that have been added to Roku devices in the UK. Other websites offering Roku channel listings will base their contents on the Roku USA Channel Store, which means they also include apps that are unavailable to UK Roku users. So, like I've said before... if you really want to know what's available channel-wise, for owners of Roku devices in the UK, you need to be reading this blog each and every week! ;-) :-)
