Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #314

Hi, everyone !!

After a slight dip in the number of new channels last week, compared to the massive list of apps for the seven day period prior to that, I'm pleased to say that things appear to be "on the up" once more as we've had ANOTHER MAMMOTH CROP OF NEW CHANNEL RELEASES to further boost the UK Channel Store total. To wit, no less than ONE HUNDRED AND ONE NEW ROKU APPS have been added to the already vast selection of over six thousand two hundred apps which populated the channel store this time last week. This means we've now been blessed with close to eleven hundred new apps, in a period of only eleven weeks, any of which UK Roku owners can add to the individual selection of apps that are installed on their device(s). As if all that wasn't enough, there's been several more items of streaming-related news for me to report on so, without further delay, here goes...

Let's kick things off with the only item of Roku-specific news to emerge during the last seven days... which was a report - published via the 'MacRumors' website - that Roku and Apple are close to finalising their negotiations over support for 'Airplay 2' on the Roku platform. The integration is expected to come in the form of an Roku OS software update but, as of right now, it's unclear exactly which Roku models will benefit from 'Airplay 2' support and/or whether Roku will extend this to "other" countries/regions outside of the United States.

Not that it currently has any relevance for Roku users outside of North America but, the 'Airplay 2' update is also reportedly to be extended to Roku TV's as well as their range of streaming media players. To wit, those with Smart TV's built around the Roku OS, from brands such as TCL, Sharp, Hisense, Hitachi, Sanyo, and RCA, can also look forward to streaming video, audio, photos, and other content directly from iPhones, iPads, or Mac computers to their Roku TV's. According to the report, Apple and Roku are now in the final stages of agreeing a launch date for this new partnership as well as the marketing strategy surrounding the launch of 'AirPlay 2' support on the Roku platform. After years of limited support for Apple devices in conjunction with the Roku platform, and not much besides the odd private channel (remember 'TrimePlay' anyone?) to provide a workaround, this news will doubtless be greeted with great approval from an end-user perspective and I, for one, can't wait!

Although Roku has yet to publicly confirm any of the above plans, sources familiar with the matter have confirmed that talks have been ongoing for some time now. However, when approached for any comment on this particular subject, a Roku spokesperson said nothing save for:

"We don't have anything to share regarding this now"

So, while it's still not absolute, there is (at least) a glimmer of hope that Roku customers will finally be able to stream more than photos taken on, or videos recorded with, their iDevices (iPhone, iPad) to their Roku media players. Whether this will extend to full iTunes support remains to be seen... but, all things considered, if these reports turn out to be true, it's definitely a step in the right direction! ;-) :-D

Funnily enough, it was another iPhone related news article - published via the 'AppleInsider' website - that caused me to speculate as to the possibility of some day being able to stream 'Xbox' games via Roku media players. The report concerned 'Microsoft' and their forthcoming 'Project xCloud' service which is a new cloud-based gaming platform that has been in-development for a long time now. The original announcement in October 2018 - published via the 'Microsoft' blog - featured the following short video (running time: 03m 46s) providing a general overview of this game-streaming service:-

The basic concept is that, by rendering the game in the cloud and streaming the video, it can enable users to enjoy console-level graphical quality on all devices, regardless of specification, so long as they are capable of handling a video stream. Given Microsoft's work on their Software Development Kit (SDK) over the years it is fairly safe to assume that 'Project xCloud' will be platform-agnostic in terms of functioning across a range of mobile devices - including Apple's iPhone / iPad range, as well as Android phones and tablets - but, as smart TV boxes are also capable of handling video streams, it is not without the realms of possibility that 'Project xCloud' may be extended to the various streaming media players such as Roku, Fire TV, etc. whose Set-Top Boxes (STB's) and streaming sticks ought to handle cloud-based game streams just as well as any other video stream - Xbox on Roku anyone?

Of course, the one potential stumbling block that I can see - in so far as bringing 'Project xCloud' to the Roku platform is concerned - would be the connection of a suitable gaming controller. However, given that you can already pair more than one Roku remote to these streaming devices, it ought not to be too difficult to engineer it so that a third-party gaming controller can be hooked-up using the same WiFi Direct method (or similar) in order to play games... or, at least, I wouldn't have thought so! The way I see things, it could either be done like that or Roku would have to add 'Bluetooth' functionality to future devices - similar to the way things are done with 'Fire TV' products from Amazon - but the fact that Roku have long since shied-away from using Bluetooth remotes leads me to believe this may not be the preferred way of implementing connectivity to game controllers. Moreover, the need for a Bluetooth connection would also rule-out the use of many existing Roku products and "force" users to purchase a newer Bluetooth-compatible model for 'Project xCloud' on Roku to work in this way. So if Microsoft's vision of providing seamless gameplay across all devices, thus enabling "the same choice and versatility that lovers of music and video enjoy today" by so-doing, is to become a reality then - as far as Roku customers are concerned - something is going to need to be done about it soon!

More details about 'Project xCloud' will be shared by 'Microsoft' in the coming months, with the tech giant indicating it will open-up the service for testing by the public in "real-world scenarios" later in 2019. Meanwhile, let's just enjoy this short video demonstration (running time: 05m 19s) illustrating actual gameplay footage of 'Forza Horizon 4' being streamed to an Android mobile phone which was connected to an 'Xbox' controller via 'Bluetooth' and dream of doing the same on our Roku devices:-

For any 'Xbox' gamers out there who would like to know more about 'Project xCloud', regardless of whether (or not) we get to enjoy the forthcoming cloud-based service on the Roku platform, further reading on the subject can be found on the 'Windows Central website both in this post from the end of last year, and another followup post which was published on 4th February 2019, as well as the most recent update which can be found in this related article on the 'Xbox News' website. Hopefully this won't be the last we'll hear about 'Project xCloud' in terms of streaming 'Xbox' games on Roku but, for the time being, this is pure speculation on my part... guess we'll just have to wait and see! ;-) :-)

Moving on to news of a streaming service which will (perhaps) be more familiar to UK Roku users, and especially of interest to those with contracts for 'EE' mobile phones, will be the latest news as regards 'Entertainment on EE' details of which were made public - via the 'EE' website - in the last seven days since my previous 'Weekly RoundUp' post was published with news to the effect that it is now possible to GET SIX MONTHS OF 'AMAZON PRIME VIDEO' FREE WITH 'EE' plus an extra boost for 'EE' customers, who are eligible for the offer, in that the company has promised to cover the cost of any data used when streaming 'Prime Video' via mobile data when watching on your phone.

If you don't already have access to 'Prime Video' through your membership to 'Amazon Prime' then this is an excellent opportunity for 'EE' customers to experience all that the service has to offer... simply by texting "PRIME VIDEO" to '150' from their 'EE' mobile phone. Once registered, it will then be possible to sign-in to the 'Prime Video' channel (app) on your Roku device & enjoy streaming all of the box sets, movies plus award-winning exclusives like 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel', along with Tom Clancy's 'Jack Ryan', 'The Man in the High Castle', 'Vikings', etc. on your big screen TV!

Speaking of large screen televisions... the next newsworthy item I have for you, which may be of interest, concerns the results from a recent study by 'Nevion' which found that the big screen in our living rooms (and, possibly, elsewhere) remains the most popular medium for viewing. The research showed almost three quarters of respondents prefer to watch on TV, while only 20 per cent use their laptop for viewing content regularly. When speaking about the results of their study, Olivier Suard (Vice President of Marketing, Nevion) observed the following:-

"People want to sit down and watch on a big screen, and dedicate real time to it,
rather than watching on their phone while they’re on the go”

Another tidbit of information to emerge from Olivier Suard's conclusions of this latest research was:-

“Despite the rise of on-demand services, live content is still favoured by the majority...
with 73 per cent of our sample deeming live coverage important"

According to the results of their study, when looking at the most popular live TV events, sports came out top, followed by news, reality shows and domestic or global events, such as royal weddings and presidential inaugurations. While this finding, in and of itself, may not come as much of a surprise to most of us... the statistics concerning Free-To-Air (FTA) were quite astonishing, with Olivier Suard revealing - to my surprise, might I add - far less people now choose free content over paid, saying:-

“We can see that the majority of individuals are willing to pay for good content
with free to air TV the first choice for only 10 per cent of viewers”

If you'd like to read more about this global survey of consumers regarding OTT and live services, conducted on behalf of 'Nevion' - a provider of virtualised media production solutions - then you will find additional comment in these related articles published - via the 'Advanced-Television' website - as well as - via the 'TVB Europe' website - online, both of which offer more insight on the subject. If, on the other hand, you'd rather see the results in illustrated form... here's a summary in picture form:-

Meanwhile another recent survey of 2,000 UK adults, conducted by online TV service 'Netgem.TV', appears to support the findings by 'Nevion' re: the willingness of people to pay for top quality content by finding that streaming services such as 'Netflix' and Amazon's 'Prime Video' are now as popular as traditional paid-for packages from 'Sky', 'Virgin Media' and 'BT TV'... with 58 per cent of respondents having a 'Netflix' or 'Prime Video' account, which is almost equal to the 59 per cent who pay for one or more of the big three providers - i.e. 'Sky', 'Virgin Media', or 'BT TV' - although, with the amount charged by those services, I'd be very surprised if "...or more..." applied to all but a very small group from those surveyed. Having myself 'Cut The Cord' long ago, and been streaming via my Roku boxes for upwards of seven years, I cannot conceive of paying for just one of those cable / satellite services, never mind two - especially when you can get pretty much all of the same content both on-demand, to view at a time which suits you, as well as via live streaming (for those broadcasts you simply have to watch as they happen) for only a fraction of the cost, just by using a combination of Roku apps! ;-)

When you consider that almost six in ten (56%) of those surveyed, who were also customers of 'Sky', 'Virgin' or 'BT', still stream additional content on (at least) a weekly basis - with that figure rising to 74 per cent among those aged 18 to 34 - it is clear that the appetite for streamed, on-demand, content by UK viewers is surging... which suggests the number of "streamers" will surpass more "traditional" viewers before too long. Speaking about the results of the survey Netgem.TV's Managing Director, Sylvain Thevenot, made the following observation about the effect of streaming in recent years:-

“The findings show the extent to which the dominance of traditional pay-TV providers
has been disrupted by cheaper ‘pick and play’ online services”

Netgem.TV's MD also believes that the advent of free and affordable streaming poses the question:

"Why would anyone pay for expensive TV bundles which cater for one taste?"

With catch-up players and streaming services - the vast majority of which are on the Roku platform in the UK already - all gaining in popularity among the viewing public of the United Kingdom, it must only be a matter of time before the majority switch to (a selection of) more personalised services, that can provide access to a far wider range of content, for a much lower (combined) monthly cost. When you discover that almost one-third (32 per cent) of those surveyed, who also have an account with the likes of 'Sky', 'Virgin Media' or 'BT TV', believe their paid-for TV package is "poor or terrible value for money" you begin to wonder why more of them have not made the switch to streaming already. If our experience, over the last seven years, is anything to go by... there's not much you're likely to miss!

According to the study, details from which were published - via the 'Advanced-Television' website - online for all to see, it appears the trend for more TV being streamed via online services looks set to continue apace, with younger viewers more likely to pay for a streaming service than satellite / cable. The findings indicate that almost half (45 per cent) of 18 to 34 year-olds now have 'Netflix', compared to only 20 per cent of people aged 55 and over, but if the older generation wishes to make their money and/or their pensions go further they would be well advised to learn from their offspring and ditch those cable or satellite subscriptions in favour of free and affordable streaming services. We've saved hundreds, if not thousands of pounds, over the years - since we made the switch - and there's no reason why others among you, who are still paying through the nose for cable and/or satellite, could not do the same... as well as gaining more flexibility over when you watch your chosen programming. So, if you've been sitting on the fence about dropping your cable/satellite service, the evidence from these recent surveys seems to suggest that now is the time to do so... and 'Roku' is the way to go! :-D

Once you've bought yourself a Roku streaming media player, you can always bookmark this blog and pay us a visit each weekend, when we publish our 'Weekly RoundUp' of all the new Roku channels (apps) which have been released throughout the course of the previous week and see if there's any that appeal to your individual taste(s). With more than six thousand three hundred to choose from at the time of writing, plus dozens more being released (almost) every week of the year, you will be hard pushed not to find something which tickles your fancy... and, more often than not, there's a good chance that whatever it is will be FREE-TO-ADD and/or FREE-TO STREAM on your Roku device. Although, once in a while, a decent paid and/or subscription channel will come along that is usually worthy of consideration and will often come with the offer of a free trial period... so you can often get plenty of premium content (for free) to bulk-out the freebies that are already available any time! ;-)

Before I get into the current list of channels, however, I would just like to point-out that the issue of 'undefined' apps (i.e. those with no permanent category shown in the web channel store description) appears to have finally been resolved. Over the last seven days I've noticed that pretty much all of the new Roku channels (apps) which were added to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store now have their category displayed on the individual webpage(s) providing a description of the channel(s) for the Roku Web Channel Store. This suggests to me that Roku appears to have sorted-out whatever problem had been causing so many new channels to be added without a permanent category. Over the course of the last eleven weeks, my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts have seen a total of 1,086 new channels added so, with any luck, time-permitting I can now go back and start adding the "missing" categories (i.e. genres) to my previous posts. Meanwhile, the number of 'Roku Guide' reviews being published has continued to fall short of the mark during the past week. Looking at all the articles they have published since the start of the year, there has been a total of only 341 new reviews added to their website. With another sixty-five "missing" reviews from the last seven days they remain more than two-thirds shy of where they should be and, if it continues, there could be hundreds (if not thousands) of Roku channels with no corresponding independent review for me to provide a link from the relevant 'Weekly RoundUp' posts on my blog. I'm hoping the shortfall is addressed soon because, as mentioned seven weeks ago, the current situation isn't good for anyone with a connection to the Roku platform: be they end-users, developers, bloggers like myself, or even Roku - whose platform provides the very source from which the 'Roku Guide' website generates their reviews! :-O

Still, back to the list... which, as always, will help you to identify the very latest apps that have been added to Roku devices in the UK. Other websites offering Roku channel listings will base their contents on the Roku USA Channel Store, which means they also include apps that are unavailable to UK Roku users. So, like I've said before... if you really want to know what's available channel-wise, for owners of Roku devices in the UK, you need to be reading this blog each and every week! ;-) :-)

With twice the number of active links to check out, not just for this week... but each and every post that has been previously published as part of my 'Weekly RoundUp' series over the last six years, there's a *lot* to catch-up on. So, without further ado, here's my 'Weekly RoundUp' of all the new Roku channels released between 10th March 2019 and 16th March 2019:-

***N.B. THIS WAS UNCATEGORISED in the Roku UK Channel Store WHEN RELEASED***

PLEASE NOTE:- That, despite having an active link to a dedicated webpage for 'DH TV Online' in the Roku Web Channel Store, there appears to be some sort of issue which is preventing the webpage from loading. For this reason, I have been unable to ascertain which of the channel store categories has been assigned as the permanent "home" for the 'DH TV Online' channel on the Roku platform. It is still (currently) listed among the list of new additions to the channel store in the 'Just Added' genre - via both the built-in Roku Channel Store found under 'Streaming Channels' on all Roku players and the equivalent 'Just Added' category of the Roku Web Channel Store online - but, without performing an audit of the six thousand three hundred plus apps which currently populate the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store, I cannot say which of the available genres (i.e. categories) contains this Roku app. So, until such a time as the above link functions correctly, I have little choice but to mark this channel as being 'Uncategorised' (or, 'Undefined', as Roku might call it) and hope they address the matter soon!

PLEASE NOTE:- That although the above channel was originally released under the more obvious title: "I Dream of Jodie" it was subsequently changed to "The Club Tour of Jodie Moore" before then being re-submitted by the developer, along with a different channel icon (aka 'HD Poster' image), and hence the difference in the URL's for the original description (from the Roku Web Channel Store) plus the 'Roku Guide' review (which was not even published until after the name was changed). That said, both the original link (provided above) and the updated Roku Channel Store description for the current version of the app (as referenced in the 'Roku Guide' review) will redirect to the same channel store description which now includes the revised name of "The Club Tour of Jodie Moore" as well as the updated 'HD Poster' image that can be readily identified from the sample screenshot below:-

Given the subject matter still relates to the "I Dream of Jodie" series, I'm not sure why the developer thought it necessary to make the above change(s) but I have decided to leave details of both versions in this post so that any search (for either version) will still point to just this one article on my blog. It is clear from the unique channel store identifier ".../details/278116" found in both URL's that, despite the variation in the channel names plus their associated icons, these refer to different versions of one and the same Roku app so, to avoid further confusion, I've decided not to list them individually.

Anyhow, like it or not, that is your lot this week and, while I don't yet have an exact figure for the new apps which were added to the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store in the same time-frame, at least you have 101 NEW CHANNELS to keep you occupied while I check the numbers! ;-) :-) Meanwhile, for those still clinging-on to their NowTV device(s) for whatever reason, I'm pleased to say that, unlike most weeks, when there are zero new Roku channels (apps) added to the 'App Store' on NOW TV products... on this occasion, there was 1 NEW CHANNEL FOR NOW TV DEVICES which ought to please those 'NOW TV' customers who number among the diaspora from India:-

HOTSTAR...........................................COST: FREE + £11.99 (MONTHLY) [Roku Guide Review]

***N.B. THIS IS FOR 'NOW TV' BOXES / STICKS AND NOT (YET?) ON ROKU IN UK!!***

PLEASE NOTE:- That, although this 'Hotstar' channel is FREE-TO-ADD to 'NOW TV' device(s), anyone wishing to watch live sports, TV shows, and movies from India via this streaming service should note that A SUBSCRIPTION WILL BE REQUIRED in order to access any of the videos in their content library. Although the subscription fee of £11.99 PER MONTH may seem quite high, if it is compared to other Subscription Video on Demand (SVoD) streaming services, there are still some significant savings to be made with their ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION OPTION which is available for the modest sum of ONLY £59.99 PER YEAR and equivalent to SAVING ALMOST £84.00 OFF the total cost of the monthly payment plan over the full twelve-month term. Hotstar offers unlimited access to 60,000+ hours of TV shows and 2000+ Indian movies, in addition to live sports such as Cricket, Kabaddi, Badminton and Hockey, with shows and movies available in 7 Indian languages: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, and Malayalam... plus a small selection in English.

ALSO:- While links have been provided (see above) to both the Roku Web Channel Store description
and the accompanying 'Roku Guide' review of the 'Hotstar' channel (app) for the Roku platform, it is not possible for those with 'NOW TV' products to make use of the 'Add channel' buttons featured on those webpages to install 'Hotstar' on NowTV Sticks and/or NowTV Boxes via a web browser. These links were included purely for reference purposes and 'NOW TV' customers should be aware that, as the channel was first released on the Roku platform in North America (specifically USA & Canada) way back in September 2017, the information contained on those webpages may no longer accurately reflect the features and/or pricing of this 'Hotstar' app in it's current state. Having taken a brief look at the subscription prices on the 'Hotstar UK' website, it would seem that the option of purchasing their 'Entertainment Only' pack no longer exists. That being the case, presumably the new customer offer of a 1-month free trial with their 'Entertainment Only' pack is also no longer available. In so far as I am aware, there are (currently) no free trials and the only choice is whether to take a 'Monthly' pack, or a 'Yearly' pack, and make an immediate payment to then access their 'Sports & Entertainment' pack for the duration of your subscription. Unfortunately for UK Roku users, it appears that 'Hotstar' have yet to make their 'Hotstar UK' service available on Roku-branded devices in the United Kingdom, although I'd expect this situation to be addressed soon. For now, however, the 'Hotstar' Roku app is only available on 'NOW TV' products - until such a time as 'Hotstar UK' submit their app to Roku for addition to the UK channel store and/or Roku approve it for inclusion therein.

Unfortunately, in addition to gaining one new Roku app, there was ALSO 1 CHANNEL REMOVED in the shape of the 'GoPro' channel which has been on UK Roku players and 'NOW TV' devices since April 2015 - SEE: 'Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #111' FOR MORE INFO - meaning the total number of Roku channels available in the NOW TV 'App Store' remains at just forty-five and, personally speaking, I've a lot more use for 'GoPro' than I do for 'Hotstar' on my devices! :-/ :-(

Moreover, with no 'TVPlayer' or 'Prime Video' apps (to name but two) among the selection of channels found in the NOW TV 'App Store' - despite having dedicated channels for both of them on UK Roku devices - the range of NowTV-branded products continues to fall short of the mark in terms of current streaming needs for many in the UK. So, the best way to increase your choice of streaming services, is to swap any NowTV-branded products you own for genuine Roku-branded media players which can provide access to 6,300+ apps of content from a vast assortment of providers! :-D ;-)

In any event, hopefully everyone in the UK with a Roku player managed to find something they like within the one hundred and one "public" channels outlined above... or else the "private" channels "gifted" to you via the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels to this blog, at various points over the past six years. However, if you didn't find anything to add to your own Roku channel selection from the assortment of apps on offer this week, you can always pay us a visit another time when, with any luck, there will be something more to your liking. After all there's no point installing every app because, when it comes to adding new channels to your Roku devices, IT'S YOUR CHOICE and, as with all things Roku... THE CHOICE IS ALWAYS YOURS!

*********************************************

As touched upon previously, you can expect my usual summary of all the goings-on (or not) in the (severely restricted) Roku Channel Store (aka "App Store") that features on NowTV devices to carry on in future posts. Meanwhile, whether you happen to own a Roku player, NowTV Box, OR BOTH, as I do... be sure to check my earlier posts (as mentioned before) for all the new additions to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store in each of the two hundred and forty preceding weeks, then come back again in seven days' time for my next 'Weekly RoundUp'. Hopefully, by the time I make my next post, I may even have sorted out another (new) companion Twitter Feed to replace the now suspended: @ukrokuchannels account so there'll still be a presence on the social media platform via which up-to-the-minute info on Roku-related matters (here in the UK) is posted on a daily basis!

Until the next time, then...

That's all folks !!
