The last option is for you to "ADD 'YYYYYY' TO ANOTHER GROUP", where 'YYYYYY' refers to the particular channel you selected. Not only is this function important for the creation & population of new channel groups but it allows for any channel to be added to as many groups as you choose. This is really useful, if your partner & yourself wish to create your own individual channel selections but there are certain channels which you both want
in your own category. Fortunately, the ability to add the same channels to multiple channel groups (i.e. "genres" or "categories", if you prefer) means that there's no need to fight over whose channel group includes Netflix (for example) because YOU CAN BOTH ADD IT TO YOUR CHANNEL GROUP without a problem. It still doesn't solve the issue over who gets the remote, unfortunately, so play fair and share it equally !! ;-)
If you decide to "ADD 'YYYYYY' TO ANOTHER GROUP", by selecting that option (using the UP/DOWN buttons) and then pressing the "OK" button, you will be re-directed to a smaller sub-screen where you will be asked to "Please select the group you would like 'YYYYYY' added to". The "Add Channel to Group" screen will look like this:-

As can be seen from the above screenshot image, the actual position of the channel group is indicated by a group name, next to where it says "Add channel to group". The available options to change this will depend upon, and be equal to, the number of channel groups on your Roku player. To find and select the channel group that you wish to add your chosen channel to, simply use the "Change Group" option (pressing repeatedly) until you arrive at your desired channel group, before selecting "OK" to save that particular setting. Of course, if you make a mistake or decide not to add your chosen channel to a particular channel group, there is also the option to "Cancel" if need be. My personal preference is to add "TuneIn Radio" to my newly created "Radio" group, so that is why I chose to "Add channel to group" by the name of "Radio" in this example.
Once you have created a few new channel groups, you will find that there are several other options available to you for customising those groups. PLEASE NOTE:- These options are AVAILABLE FOR NEWLY CREATED CHANNEL GROUPS ONLY. In other words, you won't be able to access them from any of the built-in channel groups (i.e. "All Channels", "Most Popular Channels" and "Recently Launched Channels") but, rather, from any NEW CHANNEL GROUPS which YOU HAVE CREATED to be part of the "My Channels" private channel on your Roku player.
Using the "TuneIn Radio" channel, which can now be accessed from my newly created "Radio" channel group, as an example... TO ACCESS these "OTHER" OPTIONS you will first need to SELECT A CHANNEL (in this case the "TuneIn Radio" channel) FROM one of your NEWLY CREATED CHANNEL GROUPS (in this case the "Radio" group) and, just as before, PRESS THE "OPTIONS" BUTTON on your Roku remote. Doing so will open up another "Options" sub-menu, which will look something like this:-

As with the original selection of "Options", you are (again) offered the chance to "Create a new channel group" from your (currently) selected channel 'YYYYYY' (in this case the "TuneIn Radio" channel) as well as to "Move the 'XXXXXX' group" (in this case the "Radio" group). However, you will see that there are TWO ADDITIONAL GROUP FUNCTIONS allowing you to:-
- REMOVE THE 'XXXXXX' GROUP, and;
- RENAME THE 'XXXXXX' GROUP.
Similarly, whilst you are (again) offered the chance to "Add 'YYYYYY' to another group" (in this case referring to the "TuneIn Radio" channel), there are TWO ADDITIONAL CHANNEL FUNCTIONS allowing you to:-
- REMOVE 'YYYYYY' FROM THIS GROUP, and;
- CHANGE 'YYYYYY' POSITION WITHIN THIS GROUP.
Fortunately, BOTH "REMOVE" FUNCTIONS (listed above) will result in a prompt screen that will first REQUIRE YOU TO CONFIRM THE ACTION before it is completed. This ensures that you cannot easily remove a channel from a group or, perhaps more importantly, remove an entire group of channels from your "My Channels" private channel "Home Screen" without first confirming (via an additional button press) your intention is to do just that. In layman's terms, "it's been idiot-proofed", in so far as it is reasonable to do so !!
The option to "RENAME THE 'XXXXXX' GROUP" will, if selected, result in your being redirected to a text-entry screen akin to that which greets you when you opt to "CREATE A NEW CHANNEL GROUP" (as outlined above). Here, you have the chance to enter a new name for the channel group you are currently accessing (i.e. "Radio" as mentioned in the example above). You may wish to rename it "Music", for example. Anyway, once you have decided on your new name you then need to navigate to the bottom right of the screen (using the UP/DOWN directional buttons), where there are two options ('OK' or 'Cancel'). Select "OK" to rename the current channel group (i.e. the "Radio" group) with the name you just entered (i.e. "Music", in this instance), or "Cancel" to errr... cancel !!
The option to "CHANGE 'YYYYYY' POSITION WITHIN THIS GROUP" will, as you might have expected, result in your being redirected to a similar screen to the "Change Group Position" screen that greets you when you choose to "MOVE THE 'XXXXXX' GROUP" (as outlined above). The main difference you will notice here is that, rather than a combination of "Move Down" or "Move Up", you have the option to "Move Left" or "Move Right". Likewise, the actual position of the channel within the group is (again) indicated by a number, next to where it says "New Position". However, any increment or decrement will result in a left-to-right, or right-to-left, movement as opposed to up or down. The available options to change this numeric value will (as before) correspond directly with the number of channels present within the group at any given time. To place a channel to the left of the group list, the "New Position" should be set to "1" and the next channel, moving to the right (across the group list), should be given the "New Position" of 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. up to
and equal to the total number of channels in that particular group. For example, if you had five channels in your chosen group, you would assign a "New Position" value of "1" to the channel you wished to be on the far left-hand side of the group list and a "New Position" value of "5" to the channel you wanted on the far right-hand side.
Basically, you would use any combination of the "Move Left" or "Move Right" options to arrive at your chosen "New Position" value, before selecting "OK" to save that particular setting. Of course, if you made a mistake or decided not to change the position of the channel within the group, there is also the option to "Cancel" if need be. My personal preference is to keep the channels in alphabetical order within each group so that it's easier to know where to find a channel within it's group. You, on the other hand, may decide to keep your favourite channel(s) from a particular group beside each other on the left-hand side of the group list, for easy access. Essentially, there is more than one workable option here so it's up to you to figure out what is best for you.
Now that you know what this ESSENTIAL ROKU PRIVATE CHANNEL is capable of, you just need to ask yourself WHICH of these "Home Screen" views WOULD YOU PREFER to look at?
(i) You can stick with the "Official" Roku "My Channels" sub-menu, with a viewable onscreen grid of ONLY NINE CHANNELS WITH A GIANT AD BANNER ALONGSIDE like this:-

(ii) DARE TO BE DIFFERENT and go with the "Alternative" Roku private channel "Home Screen Organizer & Channel Launcher" also called (somewhat confusingly) "My Channels", with a viewable onscreen grid of FIFTEEN CHANNELS WITH NO GIANT AD BANNER like this:-
HINT: Click on this & ENLARGE IT as much as you like... there's NO ADS HERE !!
Opt for the latter, and what you will get is the look and feel of something more akin to the previous "Official" Roku Channel Store version (BEFORE the advent of the "New Roku Experience", that is) and, BETTER YET, you can CUSTOMISE IT to your taste & ADD YOUR OWN CATEGORIES !!
So, as you can see, the "My Channels" private channel is THE IDEAL SOLUTION when it comes TO FINDING THE CHANNEL YOU WANT TO WATCH and enables you to do so FASTER, as well as MORE EASILY plus, perhaps best of all, WITHOUT ANY ADVERTISING getting in your way. The "My Channels" private channel functions as both a "Home Screen" channel organizer
and a fast, effective channel launcher for all of your channels. It allows you to sort all of the channels currently installed on your Roku player into logical channel groups, giving you faster & easier access to all of your favorites. You can ADD AS MANY CHANNEL GROUPS AS YOU WANT, not forgetting that ANY CHANNEL can be IN AS MANY GROUPS AS YOU WANT and, better still, you can arrange the channels so that ANY CHANNEL can be IN ANY POSITION WITHIN A GROUP or, if need be, ANY CHANNEL CAN BE REMOVED FROM A GROUP at any time. Furthermore, ANY CHANNEL GROUP that you create CAN BE MOVED, as well as REMOVED or even RENAMED, if you so choose. Even finding channels within a channel group is easier with the "My Channels" private channel because it STILL ALLOWS FOR FASTER MENU SCROLLING using the "FWD SCAN" and/or "REV SCAN" buttons for 5 X FASTER SCROLLING functionality.
In fact, THE ONLY THING I WOULD CHANGE about this private channel is to incorporate the channel details (i.e. the "Channel Name" & "Version Info") within the "Option" menu. The reason for that IS TO REMOVE THE "SPEECH BUBBLE" (from the currently selected channel) AND HAVE A MUCH CLEANER LOOK with only the multi-coloured band to highlight the currently selected channel. This would allow for a genuinely uncluttered look with A FIFTEEN CHANNEL VIEWABLE GRID on display, at all times, WITH NO OVERLAID CHANNEL INFO to obstruct two of the channel icons in the grid (as is presently the case). I'm fairly sure that this could be achieved with a simple change of coding to add an option such as "View Selected Channel Details" from which the "Channel Name" & "Version Info" could be displayed on-demand, if needed. For the most part, the channel icons used to represent their respective channels are sufficient to be able to recognize any given channel that you may have selected, so the "Speech Bubble" info (to me at least) is just overkill. That said, I would still rather have this private channel "
as is" than to go without it because I really love the functionality of it and find it infinitely preferable to the "Official" look of 60% channel grid plus 40% advertising, in terms of the available screen real estate. I'm just saying, is all...
Anyway, to sum it up... if you want to have quick & easy access to your favorite channels on your Roku player, you cannot be without this private channel. INSTALL IT NOW... YOU WON'T REGRET IT !!
