Awesome Horror Streams for Hallowe'en Screams on Roku - DAY 01: Tenebrae (1982) [dir. Dario Argento]

Greetings, Boils & Ghouls...

... and welcome to 'Day One' of "Awesome Horror Streams for Hallowe'en Screams on Roku" where I aim to bring you the first fright flick from the carefully curated catalogue of macabre movies which have been thrilling 'Shudder UK' subscribers for almost a year now & any of which can be streamed on TV via the magic of Roku media players - so, dim the lights... and prepare for some frights! :-O

If you read my special hallowe'en blogathon preview - FOUND HERE - which I published yesterday, then you'll know that I plan to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article every day, throughout the month of October, featuring one horror movie per day from the current 'Shudder UK' content library. With recommendations for thirty-one of the best fright flicks I can find, by the end of the month, this means you should have plenty of great choices for your macabre movie viewing as we count down the days to Hallowe'en... as well as ensuring some top-notch cinematic scares come October 31st! ;-)

To get things started, I'm going to suggest "Tenebrae" [aka Tenebre] which was written and directed by Dario Argento, with cinematography by Luciano Tovoli, and featuring an awesome soundtrack by Massimo Morante, Fabio Pignatelli & Claudio Simonetti (Goblin). The reason I've decided to go with this particular film, for the inaugural post in my month-long blogathon, is that this month marks the 35th anniversary of the original theatrical release of 'Tenenbre' in Italy on 28th October 1982. Here is the poster which would have greeted Italian cinema-goers at that time:-

Using Dario Argento's trademark visual style, linked with one of his more coherent plots, 'Tenebre' (or, 'Tenebrae', as it was known in the UK) follows a writer, Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa), who arrives in Rome to find somebody is using his novels as inspiration (and, occasionally, as the means) to commit murder. This serial killer is bent on harassing the author while, at the same time, killing all people associated with the work on his latest book. As the death toll mounts the police are ever baffled, and the writer becomes more closely linked to the case. Meanwhile, the author conducts his own investigations... with the help of his beautiful assistant, Anne (Daria Nicolodi), and a tenacious young local named Gianni (Christian Borromeo). As the murderer brutally dispatches more & more victims, we bear witness to many well-directed and aesthetically-shot murder scenes, as the author gets closer and closer to discovering the psychopath’s identity! :-O

There is an official trailer available on YouTube, so that you can get a feel for this stylish Giallo film, and (for those who may be unfamiliar with the genre) this makes for a great introduction... although, to further whet your appetite, here is the original British Quad Poster used in UK cinemas:-

The tagline reads: "...TERROR BEYOND BELIEF" and, as we follow this descent into madness, we get just that... with "Unrelenting terror from the maker of DEMONS, CREEPERS and SUSPIRIA!". This is pure 'Giallo' and, for a genre that pretty much peaked in the 70's, this film marked a welcome return to the genre for the director after diversifying styles for a couple of films... which included the equally brilliant 'Suspiria' and, along with 'Deep Red', 'Phenomena', 'Inferno', and 'Mother of Tears' show why Dario Argento's creations were among the most influential horror films of the 70's & 80's.

Aside from being a personal favourite of mine, this film comes highly recommended for having both gorgeous visuals and a great story that engages on many different levels. It certainly does make for compelling viewing, and really makes you think - even long after it's over - so, don't be surprised if it takes multiple screenings for you to get everything you can from it... and, on that note, I suppose I'd better give you the link to watch it via the 'Shudder UK' website - for those times when you are away from your Roku device(s) - or, for anyone who doesn't yet subscribe to sign-up & start watching! ;-)

LINK TO WATCH 'Tenebrae' (1982) [dir. Dario Argento] ONLINE VIA 'SHUDDER UK' WEBSITE

Unfortunately for readers outside the UK, at the time of writing, this seminal horror classic does not appear to be available via 'Shudder' in the U.S. or Canada... however, you may have other resources at your disposal and, if you are able to find it, this Dario Argento 'Giallo' film deserves to be seen! :-)

If you do happen to watch it, and are keen to know more, there are a few good online sources for further information. WARNING: These links will redirect you to websites which most definitely contain spoilers for 'Tenebrae' by Dario Argento so - SPOILER ALERT - do not visit these websites until after you have seen the movie... unless you want to know what you're letting yourself in for! ;-)

Anyway... first up, there is an in-depth review by Slant Magazine [Twitter Feed: @Slant_Magazine] that really dissects the storyline and goes into great detail about the film. Great for tying-up any loose threads you may have been pondering after watching the film... but offering a bit too much for those of you who have yet to see it. Then, secondly there is a dedicated webpage on 'Wikipedia' with lots more interesting facts about 'Tenebrae' for horror movie fans to absorb. Lastly, for a full list of movie credits plus assorted film trivia, there is the IMDb Listing for 'Tenebrae' which may also be of use! ;-)

Since this film has spawned many devoted fans, in the 35 years since it was first released, I feel I owe it to them (and you) that a fan-made poster for 'Tenebrae' be used to round-off this article with some contemporary artwork inspired by the film... so feast your eyes on this then go enjoy the movie! ;-) :-)

Awesome Horror Streams for Hallowe'en Screams on Roku - Highlighting Some Great Films from Shudder UK *** SPECIAL MONTH-LONG BLOGATHON PREVIEW ***

Hi, everyone !!

Well... would you believe it!?! September has come to an end already and, aside from being the time for Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day to get woken-up, it means that (in the Northern Hemisphere) Autumn (or, "Fall", as it's perhaps better known to our friends across 'The Pond') is rapidly closing in (once again) and, as it does so, the days will get shorter while the nights grow longer... and darker - as we count down the days to Hallowe'en at the end of October !!!!!! :-O ;-) :-)

Anyway... one advantage of these long, dark nights is that they're pretty much perfect for huddling up and watching movies on your Roku player. I'm sure many Roku owners (myself included) will be enjoying the build-up to Hallowe'en by watching something horror-related or slightly more scary than usual on their Roku player(s) as October 31st draws ever nearer...

If that sounds like you, then you may already be familiar with an annual online event which is known as the "Countdown To Hallowe'en" that encourages participants (i.e. bloggers) to contribute to a month-long blogging marathon in honour of the Hallowe'en season. I've long been a fan of this event but, since I only started my UK Roku blog in 2013, I made my debut as an "Official" 'Cryptkeeper' for the 'Countdown To Hallowe'en 2013' and participated again for 'Countdown To Hallowe'en 2014' and 'Countdown To Hallowe'en 2015', as well as the 'Countdown To Hallowe'en 2016' last year. Fortunately, being an annual event, this fiendishly fun (and sometimes frightening) celebration has presented me with yet another prime opportunity to spotlight even more of the Hallowe'en / Horror themed Roku content for you in the build-up to Hallowe'en 2017...

As with the last few years, because the series of posts I have planned will be devilishly different from my regular weekly offerings (not to mention a lot more frequent, too) I plan to group them all under a unifying banner. However... instead of "A MummyVision Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku" as used in 2013, or "Another CreatureFeature Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku" as it was known in 2014, or the subsequent "Alucard's Bat-tastic Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku" from 2015, not forgetting my look back over "A Cinematic History of Horror for Hallowe'en On Roku" from my Hallowe'en blogathon in 2016, I plan to offer more "Awesome Horror Streams for Hallowe'en Screams on Roku", but still endeavour to bring you one post every day, throughout October, culminating (as you might expect) on the 31st... when the Countdown To Hallowe'en 2017 ends and the celebrations begin !!! :-O ;-) :-)

For quick & easy access to the official Countdown To Hallowe'en website which includes a list of all "Cryptkeepers" (i.e. contributing bloggers) for 2017 with yours truly (once again) among them (plus details of all past contributors) you'll find the following badge with a built-in link to their website in the upper right hand column of my blog for the duration of the Countdown To Hallowe'en 2017:-

Please make the effort to click on the badge and visit the Countdown To Hallowe'en website to show your support for this annual online Hallowe'en extravaganza PLUS don't forget to use the links you find there and check out all the other 'Cryptkeepers' taking part this year. I know they'll appreciate it if you visit their blogs & share your thoughts on the contribution(s) they've made.

For my part, albeit in a slightly different format to last year, I'll (once again) endeavour to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article every day, throughout the month of October, each covering one horror movie from the amazing selection of films that are available from the 'Shudder' streaming service. With 31 top horror titles to choose from by the end of the month, you'll have plenty of choice for your macabre movie viewing in celebration of Hallowe'en on 31st October 2017. If you are not yet familiar with 'Shudder', it is a specialised streaming service, brought to you by AMC Networks, and built to super-serve fans of the thriller, suspense, and horror genres. As such, 'Shudder' considers itself a “diabolical” premium streaming service with “something for everyone, from the casual fan to the hardcore horror devotee” and, as someone who falls into the latter category (much of the time), I am more than happy to part with the modest sum of £4.99 per month for access to what some have described as "The Dark Horse of Streaming Services", and I have to agree... it's fang-tastic !!!!! For those of you who already subscribe to the 'Shudder' service, you will (no doubt) be aware that they have "Guest" curators (from time-to-time) sharing their pick of what they consider to be the best films from the content available at the time of asking. So, for the purposes of this blogathon, I thought I'd expand upon the usual guest curation of half-a-dozen (or so) titles and share (in no particular order) what I consider to be thirty-one of the best films on 'Shudder' as of October 2017. As in years gone by, I'll try to ensure that as many of the featured movies are also available on Roku in Canada and the USA (not just the UK & Ireland) however, due to geographical restrictions, I reserve the right to post certain films which may only be available here and not (currently) on Roku in USA and/or Canada. Either way, you can rest assured there will be PLENTY of Hallowe'en / Horror themed movie content available to stream FOR ALL ROKU OWNERS, who have access to 'Shudder' and/or Roku! ;-) :-)

Meanwhile, if there's any Roku Channel Developers or Content Providers who are featuring any of the horror movies I mention on their channel and would like to be included in this series of articles then feel free to comment below or via the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels providing details of your channel and I will be only too happy to mention it by way of an additional option for Roku users to stream that movie. Your assistance with this is much appreciated... although I cannot guarantee that each individual channel will be included for every movie, as there is obviously only a finite number of posts that can be made throughout the month and I may not have the time. Don't let that put you off though because, if I can't squeeze you in this time around, then there's always the possibility of being included in next year's Countdown To Hallowe'en to look forward to! ;-)

Anyway, I just wanted to give you all a "heads up" as to what I've got planned for this blog over the month of October. Of course, there will still be my regular 'Weekly RoundUp' posts to keep you informed of ALL NEW ADDITIONS to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store during that time. All of which means... that there's now even more reason(s) for you to visit this blog on a regular basis as you prepare for your own Roku-assisted Hallowe'en celebration(s)... Mwah-Ha-Haaaaaaaaaa !!!!!!!!

Still, that's about it for now... I hope to see most, if not all, of you back here tomorrow and each day of October as we bring you more "Awesome Horror Streams for Hallowe'en Screams on Roku" over the entire Countdown To Hallowe'en for 2017. Be afraid... BE VERY AFRAID !!!!!!!!!!!!

Just don't be too afraid to pay us another visit !!

That's all folks !!
