Alucard's Bat-tastic Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku..... - Day #25 - SHOCKING SUNDAY SURPRISE (Scare Four)






Welcome back once more, Boils & Ghouls !!



As I'm sure you're all aware, there's now just six days to go in the Countdown To Hallowe'en 2015... but, fortunately, that still leaves time for another six spooktacular posts until my month-long blogathon, "Alucard's Bat-tastic Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku", finally comes to an end on October 31st. If you missed the previous instalments earlier this month then I recommend you go back and take a look at the entire series of posts since, by doing so, you'll be well on your way to having the best Hallowe'en ever, with all of the horror-related Roku content that's been shared (so far) in this spooktacular series !!


Meanwhile... here we are, less than a week away from Hallowe'en, and we're still continuing to bring  horror to the masses by showing you how best to stream it via your Roku player(s). So... what's next on the agenda ?!! Well, as mentioned previously, we think you can never have too much choice in terms of movie(s) to watch over the Hallowe'en season... so, we've continued to scour all of the available channels on the Roku player and (once again) we've managed to come up with another selection of movies for you to choose from. Suffice it to say that, if you're partial to accessing the wealth of content in the public domain, from the comfort of your living room and easily streaming it to your television (via your Roku) then you'll definitely want to add this to your current channel selection, as you prepare for some Hallowe'en / Horror-themed binge-viewing in the build-up to October 31st !!






Once again, it probably comes as no surprise, this public domain content-based Roku channel can be found in the "Movies & TV" genre (i.e. category) of the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store. Generally speaking, the 'Pub-D-Hub' channel provides an assortment of content including classic films, trailers, tv shows, cartoons, radio & more, covering the period from the 1930's to 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's & beyond... all of which can (currently) be watched completely free-of-charge. With multiple genres (i.e. categories) ranging from Action/Adventure to Cartoons, Cautionary Films, Comedy, Commercials, Crime, Drama, Educational Films, Flick or Treat, Horror & Sci-Fi, plus Old Time Radio, Silent Films, Thrillers/Suspense, TV and Westerns, you'll never be hard-pushed to find something that suits your taste. As such you can expect to see anything from the comedy, set in 16th century Spain, known as "The Adventures Of Don Quixote" (1933) directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst, to the animated short "There's Good Boos Tonight" (1948), directed by Izzy Sparber, which features Casper The Friendly Ghost, or else the sixties family comedy that is "The Beverly Hillbillies", created by Paul Henning, about a nouveau-riche hillbilly family that moves to Beverly Hills and shakes up the privileged society with their Hayseed ways. You'll find multiple episodes of this and many other classic television series available to watch via the 'Pub-D-Hub' channel on Roku. Perhaps best of all, is that all of the content on the 'Pub-D-Hub' channel is COMPLETELY FREE-TO-WATCH too !!


Obviously, having multiple genres to choose from in the main menu of the 'Pub-D-Hub' channel means that not all of the included content is entirely relevant to this post. So, sticking to the general theme of Hallowe'en, the (current) selections to be found in the "Flick or Treat" plus "Horror and Sci-Fi" sections of the 'Pub-D-Hub' channel (incl. Horror and Sci-Fi (109 Titles)




Given that there are only twenty-two titles available in the "Flick or Treat" genre, it's a shame that more than one third of those are also listed among the one hundred and nine titles which comprise the "Horror and Sci-Fi" genre. That said, you still have well over one hundred unique titles to choose from across the two genres and, once you've accessed the main menu of the 'Pub-D-Hub' channel, you'll doubtless find a few others that interest you among the included titles from the remaining genres. 


Still... looking firstly at the "Flick or Treat" category, and (as before) ignoring all titles that have received a special mention in previous posts from this series, my own PICK OF THE BUNCH from the remainder (if a bit obvious to all true horror fans out there) WOULD HAVE TO BE... the short adaptation of "The Fall Of The House Of Usher" (1928) directed by Melville Webber & James Sidley Watson, closely followed by Bram Stoker's "Dracula", taken from the vintage radio show "Mercury Theater On The Air", starring Orson Welles, and "The Black Raven" (1943), directed by Sam Newfield. Aside from that, I'd also recommend checking out the other OTR Shows, as well as the short video "Hallowe'en In Carson City" to see footage of the way that houses are often decorated for Hallowe'en in the USA. On the other end of the scale, ONE'S TO AVOID ARE... most certainly the likes of Larry Buchanan's "It's Alive" (1969) and, perhaps, "Scream Bloody Murder" (1973) directed by Marc B. Ray. After that, you can pretty much take your pick of the rest and you should be alright. 


Moving on to the "Horror and Sci-Fi" category, and (again) ignoring those titles that I've already mentioned in previous posts, as well as those which are also listed under the "Flick or Treat" category, my PICK OF THE BUNCH here is definitely the horror classic, "Deep Red" [aka "Profondo Rosso"] (1975) directed by Dario Argento, closely followed by "Spider Baby" (1968), written & directed by Jack Hill. After that, would be "Daughter Of Horror" (1955), directed by John Parker. Also worthy of a mention is the José Mojica Marins classic, "At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul" from 1964, plus Tod Browning's "Mark Of The Vampire" from 1935. As for non-horror picks, I'd recommend "Star Wreck: In The Pirkinning" (2005), directed by Timo Vuorensola, for a touch of Star Trek related humour, and "Non-Stop New York" (1937), directed by Robert Stevenson, for it's crime drama come murder plot with a bit of a romantic spin, as well as the sci-fi drama of "Transatlantic Tunnel"(1935), directed by Maurice Elvey. On the flip side of the coin, THE ONE'S TO AVOID ARE... the likes of "Manos: The Hands Of Fate"(1966) by Harold P. Warren and the TV movie "Curse Of Bigfoot" from 1976, directed by Dave Flocker. Other howlers that are worth a miss are "The Beast Of Yucca Flats" (1961), directed by Coleman Francis, plus "Horrors Of Spider Island" (1960), directed by Fritz Böttger, and not forgetting "The White Gorilla" (1945), directed by Harry L. Fraser, and "Mesa Of Lost Women" (1953) directed by Ron Ormond & Herbert Tevos. Still, love them or loathe them, this mix of Halloween 'Flick or Treat' content plus the abundance of public domain Horror and Sci-Fi movies will nevertheless ensure that you have plenty of ways to pass the time between my daily doses of Roku-related Hallowe'en horror in "Alucard's Bat-tastic Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku" as well as satisfying your appetite for Horror & Sci-Fi content in the final build-up to Hallowe'en 2015 !!

It may further interest you to know that, according to the channel description for 'Pub-D-Hub', taken from the Official Roku Website, the channel was developed for Roku by a company called Shadow Mountain Ventures LLC, who are a small group of people in eastern Pennsylvania that share a love for classic television, film and radio. You can read more about their collaboration in the paragraph entitled "Who is Pub-D-Hub?" which can be easily found VIA THIS LINK.


Those of you who wish to add this channel to the Hallowe'en-themed entertainment on your Roku player(s) but are, perhaps, unable to access the Channel Store on your device at this precise moment... can also take care of things by simply LOGGING-IN to your Online Roku Account, scrolling down to the 'Manage Account' section, and using the "Add a Channel" option. That way, when you do have access to your Roku player, the 'Pub-D-Hub' channel will be there ready for you to watch whenever you so choose !! All you must do to achieve this, is type the following access code under "Add a Channel" and click the 'Add Channel' button:-

Anyway, that's pretty much all there is to it, except to point out that the 'Pub-D-Hub' channel has been given an average score of "4.0 out of 5" from 3, 590 ratings (so far) in the channel store description from the Official Roku Website. That statistic alone should be reason enough for you to give this Roku channel a try, never mind that ALL THE CONTENT IS FREE-TO-WATCH too !!

Alucard's Bat-tastic Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku..... - Day #18 - SHOCKING SUNDAY SURPRISE (Scare Three)






Welcome back, Boils & Ghouls...



... to 'Day Eighteen' of "Alucard's Bat-tastic Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku"  and to the third instalment of my "Shocking Sunday Surprise" in which I aim to share a random selection of things, all somehow connected to Hallowe'en, and that can be used with the Roku streaming media player !!


As I mentioned previously, these offerings could vary from film suggestions to details of Roku channels (both public and private) or any number of other Hallowe'en / Horror-themed goodies to get you into the "spirit" of things. The general idea is that, unlike the other "themed" days featured in this blogathon, you never know quite what you're going to get as your "Shocking Sunday Surprise" each week, so be sure to visit this blog EVERY SUNDAY between now and October 31st for some spooktacular treats to put even more on-screen scares into your Roku player(s) as you gear up for Hallowe'en !!


For my third "Shocking Sunday Surprise", rather than share another movie, I'm going to suggest a Hallowe'en / Horror-related ROKU PRIVATE CHANNEL that I first shared last year. The brains behind this channel is none other than Charlie Fleming, who runs the 'Screamzine.us' website:-




Aside from being both "awesome" and "stupid" (their words, not mine) they adopted the guerilla spirit of pioneering director, George A. Romero, and came up with a way of promoting more horror on Roku by creating their own channel with which to share horror movie trailers, etc. Best of all, they have made the "Screamzine.us" private channel for Roku FREE-TO-ADD as well as FREE-TO-VIEW so all you have to do to enjoy the content on offer is to add "Screamzine.us" to the channel selection on your Roku player(s) by following a few simple steps...


For those of you that are not yet familiar with the concept of a PRIVATE CHANNEL on Roku, they are (essentially) ones which you will not find in the Roku Channel Store on your Roku player but are (instead) added via your online Roku account, using an ACCESS CODE (sometimes referred to as an INVITATION CODE or VANITY CODE, though all amount to the same thing) that allows you to add them via the Roku website (as opposed to doing it on your streaming media player, itself). This is done by first logging into your Roku account, VIA THE WEBSITE, at the usual address. After you "Sign In" to your account, you simply scroll down the page a little, until you come to the section headed "Manage Account", beneath which there is an option to "Add a Private Channel" with the link (enabling you to do so) highlighted in "BLUE" lettering (n.b. this is not a signal for bad language... but simply a reference to the colour!). When you CLICK THE LINK to "Add a Private Channel", you will be redirected to another page on the Roku website, headed "Add Channel", where you will find a text entry field into which you must enter the ACCESS CODE for the "Screamzine.us" private channel on Roku, as outlined below:-

This is done by using your mouse cursor to "click" within the text entry field so that you may then type the access code, "screamzine", before clicking on the 'Add Channel' button below it. Once you have entered the access code and clicked on the 'Add Channel' button, you will be taken to a confirmation screen, asking if you wish to "Add Screamzine.us to your Roku account?" whereupon you must decide whether to click, "Yes, Add Channel", to add the "Screamzine.us" private channel to your Roku account, or else "Cancel" to return to the "Manage Account" section of the Roku site. Here is an (partial) screenshot, albeit an somewhat out-of-date one, taken when  I first added the channel (last year) so that you can see more clearly that to which I am referring:-






Anyway... despite Roku having changed the look of their website since the above screenshot was taken, the "new look" private channel "add" screen remains fairly similar to that shown above and, assuming you selected "Yes, Add Channel", you should see a "success" message. After that, if you "View Your Purchase History" under the "Manage Account" section, you will see that the "Screamzine.us" private channel has (indeed) been added to your Roku account. Then, all that remains is for you to log out of your online Roku account and, next time you access your Roku player(s), you will see the following image displayed amongst the channel icons under "Home":-






When you load the channel to access the content, you will find assorted horror movies, shorts and film trailers for you to view. Here's a few examples of the type of thing found on "Screamzine.us", when I first added the details for this private channel to my blog:-



"Cannibal Aneurysm"...............by Charlie Fleming - now where have I heard that name?!!

"Marty Jenkins and the Vampire Bitches"...............by Henrique Couto

"Mongrel" and "Something After Midnight"...............by Sam Qualiana

It's worth noting that the last of those, "Slashed Dreams", is a 1975 film starring 'Robert Englund' before he became a household name as the terrifying boogeyman, "Fred 'Freddy' Krueger", in one of the biggest horror franchises of all time... "A Nightmare On Elm Street" !!

Alucard's Bat-tastic Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku..... - Day #11 - SHOCKING SUNDAY SURPRISE (Scare Two)

... to 'Day Eleven' of "Alucard's Bat-tastic Guide To Hallowe'en On Roku" and to the second in my "Shocking Sunday Surprise" series of posts for 2015 where, each week, I'll been sharing something random that is somehow connected to Hallowe'en & can be used with the Roku streaming player !!


Last week I mentioned that these particular offerings would vary from week-to-week to ensure there would be a variety of Hallowe'en / Horror-themed goodies to help get you into the "spirit" of things. If you missed my first post in this series... the general idea is that, unlike other "themed" days featured in this blogathon, you will never know quite what to expect as your "Shocking Sunday Surprise" each week, and that will remain the case EVERY SUNDAY right the way through October. Anyway... for my next spooktacular treat in this mini-series of posts, I've decided to up the ante from sharing just one movie to providing details of an entire HALLOWE'EN / HORROR-RELATED CHANNEL which will put even more on-screen scares into your Roku player(s) while you gear up for Hallowe'en 2015!!


Unlike "The Changeling" movie, which formed the basis of my "Shocking Sunday Surprise" last time around... this week I'm giving special mention to an INDIE HORROR CHANNEL for which I was hoping to include an LIVE STREAM on this blog (over the course of my month-long blogathon) but, unfortunately, we didn't manage to implement it this time - sorry - but, there's always next year! :-)


Meanwhile, although it's possible you might have (previously) overlooked this particular Roku app in the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store, perhaps (wrongly) believing it was in some way connected to that seminal 'Hardcore Punk' band from Hermosa Beach (California) - which would nevertheless have made for a pretty interesting, if somewhat niche, Roku channel too - in actual fact "BlackFlag TV", being the channel to which I'm referring, is a 24/7 LIVE FORMAT streaming television network that broadcasts "Midnight Movies" all day long, and you'll find further details for it outlined below:-







BLACK FLAG TV..........................................COST: £2.49 (MONTHLY) [Roku Guide Review]



So, at this point... I expect you're wondering why, with numerous FREE-TO-ADD not to mention FREE-TO-VIEW channels showing horror films, would you part with your hard-earned cash for this one?! Well, as 'Nicolas Archambault' from the "FanTasia International Film Festival" once wrote of 'S.V. Bell' - the man who was behind the development of the "BlackFlag TV" Roku channel - during a stage in his career when he turned his hand to film-making:-

S.V. Bell, Quebec champion of the horror film in all it's forms, a director who (rather than complain about lack of funds) takes action and each year offers an eccentric gem made with minimal means. His passion and resourcefulness more than make up for the low production costs and he always ends up with something far more entertaining than many big-budget films. Bell doesn't reinvent the wheel, but he knows the conventions of the horror film and he applies them with a competence that is equalled by his love of the genre.

That approach to his films is the same one 'S.V. Bell' adopted when coming up with the idea for this Roku channel and the fact that it's all done "on a shoestring", despite the costs associated with providing enough bandwidth to stream the channel, is why any & all true fans of horror should give their support (financial or otherwise) to keep this thing going for the greater good of the genre !!


Starting out in the 80's as a comic book artist, then turning his hand to CGI animation in the 90's and film-making (as mentioned above) in the 00's, before returning to comic book art in the current decade, 'S.V. Bell' is, as he put it himself, "running in circles" and in the marathon of horror that is his life, he needs our support, just as the runners do in the 'London Marathon', to keep going & achieve his goals.


Okay, you get it... it's gonna cost money... so, what exactly are you getting for your dough?! Well, you will get to see many truly amazing independent films, all of which have been produced by film-makers who are driven by a passion for the genre. This includes everything from independent short & feature films, series & documentaries, to vintage public domain films. Most of the content falls (unsurprisingly) under the umbrella of horror, thrillers, science-fiction, fantasy, space, action and martial arts PLUS some truly edgy, bizarre stuff that simply defies categorisation. There's no pay-per-view (PPV), no video-on-demand (VOD) and no downloadable movies, although you can always buy DVD's and subscribe to comic books as an additional means of lending your support (see links below). Instead, what you get is something akin to plain old-fashioned late night television and, whilst this may sound like a concept from the Stone Age in this age of "everything online" and "on-demand", sometimes it's nice to have more of a "curated" viewing experience where you can just sit back & enjoy what's on !!


Speaking of which... there are FULL LISTINGS for what is being shown on "BlackFlag TV", in a 'Google Calendar' friendly format, available on the "Official" BlackFlag TV website, FOUND HERE. Although, if you do pay the monthly fee, it's probably easier to just 'SUBSCRIBE' to the newsletter which takes the form of a weekly email including all scheduling information plus news of any updates to the "BlackFlag TV" channel. Should you no longer wish to receive these emails, you can also easily 'UNSUBSCRIBE' at any time. The choice, as they say, is entirely yours to make !! One thing you may notice, from viewing the schedule, is that every movie screened on "BlackFlag TV" is shown several times per week (in different time slots) and this is done to provide you with ample opportunities to watch them at a time which suits you best. I'm sure we can all remember a time when we were grateful for a "repeat" on television of something we (unfortunately) missed for one reason or another and these multiple screenings will (hopefully) help you to avoid any such disappointment with "BlackFlag TV" !!


Of course, in this age of "internet everywhere", you could always watch "BlackFlag TV" online whenever you are away from your large screen TV and your Roku player simply by accessing the "Official" BlackFlag TV website (see link above) from your mobile device. How is this possible?! Well... thanks to the generosity of 'S.V. Bell', in addition to the paid subscription Roku channel, there is also a FREE-TO-VIEW LIVE STREAM of the 24/7 programming for "BlackFlag TV" on the web. Yes, I kid you not, to be absolutely clear... you can watch "BlackFlag TV" online for absolutely no charge whatsoever, should you wish to do so. That said... let's not forget the aforementioned bandwidth charges and, if you want to go on getting FREE ONLINE ACCESS for this channel (or any access at all, come to that!) then PLEASE SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL by purchasing a monthly subscription on your Roku (even if it's only once in a while) and/or buying DVD's, subscribing to the comics, etc. For, in all seriousness, every contribution helps and they are all "much, much appreciated" !!

FYI: 'BlackFlag Pictures' is the film studio & distribution company that owns "BlackFlag TV". Essentially, the TV broadcast side of the business began as a logical continuation of the film production & distribution effort of "BlackFlag Pictures".
