Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts On Roku - Day 14: Horror Series Beginning With The Letter 'N' !!

Greetings, Boils & Ghouls...

... and welcome to 'Day Fourteen' of "Abe R. Rant's Guide To Petrifying Podcasts on Roku" where I aim to bring you another batch of Hallowe'en / Horror-related audio series from the plethora of petrifying podcasts that have been released in recent years - any of which can be streamed to your TV via the magic of Roku media players - so, let's dim down those lights... for more audio frights! :-O

If you read my special hallowe'en blogathon preview - FOUND HERE - that I published fourteen days ago, then you'll know I plan to post one Hallowe'en / Horror related article each day, throughout the month of October, featuring an assortment of links to various podcasts beginning with the same letter of the alphabet every day of the month. For the sake of simplicity, I decided to begin this series of blog posts with the letter 'A' on 'Day One', followed by letter 'B' on 'Day Two', letter 'C' on 'Day Three', and so on and so forth, right the way through to letter 'Z' on 'Day Twenty-Six'. Obviously that will still leave five more days worth of posts, by the time we reach the end of the alphabet, so I'll put my thinking cap on (between now & then) to (hopefully) come up with some extra audio "treats" for you by then. With thirty-one posts of the most spook-tacular sounding series I can find, between now and the end of the month, you'll have lots of great choice for your listening pleasure as we count the days to Hallowe'en, as well as plenty of spine-tingling thrills & chills 'twixt now and All Hallows' Eve on October 31st! :-D

For my fourteenth post in this series I'm going to share links to a (slightly) lower amount of audio "treats" than there were yesterday, but (again) they will all be from the general spectrum of horror and the paranormal, and the unifying "trick" (sic) is that the title for each of these podcast series begins with the letter 'N' - although some artistic licence has been taken to ignore "The", when used at the start of the title, so as to avoid having to post too many links for letter 'T' on 'Day Twenty' of this month-long blogathon. So, without further ado, here are my suggestions for Hallowe'en / Horror-related podcast series... the titles for which all begin with the letter 'N' of the (horror) alphabet:-

Nameless Cults: is an horror and weird fiction podcast, by Michael James Roberson and Dan Cullen: two guys who like to ramble a lot. It's a show about horror movies, weird fiction, and the dark bowers of man's domain, which hits a lot of hidden gems that may not otherwise get a lot of discussion :-)

The Narrow Caves: is the first Audiostate ever released: a new product combining the grandiosity of Hollywood films with the intimacy of audio to create an "ear-movie" experience. Adapted from a script by award-winning novelist, screenwriter, and director S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk), The Narrow Caves features voice acting by Vincent D'Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Daredevil), Will Patton (Armageddon, Falling Skies), Lili Simmons (Banshee) and Wyatt Russell (Overlord, Black Mirror). Binary Reptile provides an eerie score that contributes to the cinematic feel of this haunting piece, brought to you by the iconic horror entertainment company Fangoria, who relaunched the magazine in October 2018 as a print-only quarterly collectible. This dramatic audioplay about a sinister curse, hidden family history, and a boyfriend thrust into something horrific may have you feeling skeptical at first, but stick with it and you'll more than likely burn through this very quickly! ;-) :-D

The Night Blogger: is a horror fiction podcast series, produced by Al Bruno III, in which the voice of the lead character, Brian Foster, is that of another Brian: namely one 'Brian Mansi', a voice-over artist who handles the role of 'The Night Blogger' admirably. The blurb for the series goes something like this... "You don't have to believe the stories on my blog, you can dismiss them as good hallucinations or bad fiction if you want to but they're all true. The darkness was never empty, there are things that wait for the innocent and unwary to turn their backs. What is it you think I'm talking about here? Ghosts? Vampires? Ghouls? If only it were that simple. The creatures of the night are still out there but they're not shadowing your every footstep. They just check your status updates from the comfort of their tombs. All I ever wanted was to be a Do-It-Yourself style reporter but more often than I like I find myself becoming part of my stories. It turns out gods and monsters don't like their secrets getting out any more than your standard politician or celebrity. We all know how this is going to turn out in the end; I'm already long overdue for jail, the looney bin or a guest of honour spot at a monster buffet but until that fateful day I'm not going to back down or give up. My name is Brian Foster and some people call me The Night Blogger. But I wish they wouldn't… it's kinda cheesy!", and it's great! :-D

Nocturne: is a storytelling show exploring the night, the landscape of the unseen, plus how thoughts, feelings and behaviours can transform in the dark. The 'Nocturne' series of podcasts was created by Vanessa Lowe with Kent Sparling, and also produced by Vanessa Lowe, in conjunction with KCRW. The official description goes as follows: "There are 24 hours in a day. Seems pretty straightforward. But what do you really know about the hours between say, 11pm-6am. From graveyard shift jobs to “secret identities”, who we are and what we do at night is often less fully perceived by others, whether by choice or by circumstance. Peering into the dusty corners of the night, Nocturne explores these often overlooked and undisclosed slices of life. Under cover of darkness, our thoughts and feelings can take on strange new shapes, sometimes barely recognizable as our own. And the pulse of the world seems to alter too, sort of creating a curtain of privacy around our behaviours and even our appearance. Do I truly know you, if I only know the daytime you? Let’s find out in Nocturne! :-O ;-)

The NoSleep Podcast: is a horror anthology podcast feat. practically unlimited hours of great horror content. Taking it's title from the subreddit of the same name: r/nosleep. Both the podcast and the subreddit have a clear credo: tell us a scary story and make it feel real. There’s no doubt that very few, if any, of the stories told on 'The NoSleep Podcast' are actual first-person accounts of individuals dealing with paranormal phenomena but the important thing is that they feel like they are. Showrunner David Cummings plays the role of host capably and introduces each story with the seriousness required to maintain the atmosphere and suspension of disbelief. This long-running podcast sprung up in 2011, when members of the r/nosleep subreddit decided to start turning some of its creepy stories into audio recordings. 'The NoSleep Podcast' compiles several short, scary stories inside each episode. The format of short, sweet and terrifying makes this podcast an aural treat at bedtime. The stories are well-crafted, with expert narration and accompanying music. Each one is well-paced, with capable narrators, voice actors and sound effects. The only downside, with episodes feeling more like an audiobook than a podcast, is that there is not such an intimate bond formed between narrator and listener. Nevertheless, over the years, it has grown into a bigger and far more ambitious anthology series, as well as moving forward with a novel subscription model that lets the podcast generate revenue while still offering pared-down versions of its multi-story episodes for free. So successful have they been, in fact, that they are bringing their show "on the road" to the UK next January... with stop-offs in Brighton (8th), Sheffield (9th), Leeds (10th), Manchester (11th), London (12th), Glasgow (13th), Birmingham (14th), Bristol (15th), and Colchester (16th), if you wish to go along. With 11 seasons under it's belt, 'The No Sleep Podcast' has a lot of horror-themed content to listen to, and there’s doubtless something there to creep-out and disturb pretty much anyone! :-O ;-)
