Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #323

Hi, everyone !!

With such a vast number of new channels last week, you'd expect the numbers to be lower in the past seven days but, against the odds, we've had ANOTHER DECENT CROP OF NEW CHANNELS to further boost the UK Channel Store total. To wit, no less than SIXTY-SIX NEW ROKU APPS have been added to the already vast selection of over six thousand seven hundred apps which populated the channel store as of this time last week. This means we've now been blessed with over one thousand eight hundred new apps, during a period of just twenty weeks, any of which UK Roku owners can add to the individual selection of apps that are installed on their device(s). As if that wasn't enough... there were also several items of streaming-related news for me to report on but, as has been the case for the last two months I will (again) need to postpone my summary of Roku (and other) news from the past week until I can find time to catch up with everything and add the "missing" details to all of those posts - since, right now, I must (instead) focus on listing all of these new Roku apps for you! :-)

Before I get into the current list of channels, however, I would just like to point-out that the ongoing issue of "missing" reviews from the 'Roku Guide' website appears to have now worsened since my previous article for this blog. Over the course of the last twenty weeks, my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts have seen a total of 1,837 new channels added. Meanwhile, the number of 'Roku Guide' reviews being published has continued to fall short of the mark during that time. Looking at all of the articles they have published since the start of the year, there has been a total of only 558 new reviews added to their website. With a minimum of around another fifty-three "missing" reviews from the last week they are even closer to being seventy percent short of where they should be and, if this continues, there could be hundreds (if not thousands) more Roku channels with no corresponding independent review for me to provide a link from each of the relevant 'Weekly RoundUp' posts on my blog. I'm hoping this shortfall is addressed soon because, as mentioned sixteen weeks ago, the current situation isn't good for anyone connected to Roku: be they end-users, developers, bloggers like myself, or even Roku - whose platform provides the very source from which 'Roku Guide' generate their reviews! :-O

Still, back to the list... which, as always, will help you to identify the very latest apps that have been added to Roku devices in the UK. Other websites offering Roku channel listings will base their contents on the Roku USA Channel Store, which means they also include apps that are unavailable to UK Roku users. So, like I've said before... if you really want to know what's available channel-wise, for owners of Roku devices in the UK, you need to be reading this blog each and every week! ;-) :-)

With twice the number of active links to check out, not just for this week... but each and every post that has been previously published as part of my 'Weekly RoundUp' series over the last six years, there's a *lot* to catch-up on. So, without further ado, here's my 'Weekly RoundUp' of all the new Roku channels released between 12th May 2019 and 18th May 2019:-

100 MILE MEALS CHANNEL............................................COST: FREE [Roku Guide Review]

X MASSAGE FACTORY..........................................................COST: FREE [Roku Guide Review]

***N.B. THIS WAS UNCATEGORISED in the Roku UK Channel Store WHEN RELEASED***

PLEASE NOTE:- That, while this 'X Massage Factory' channel for Roku devices can be found within the 'Just Added' category (i.e. genre) of the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store, no permanent category / genre had (at the time of writing) been assigned to this channel in the UK. If I somehow succeed in bringing this matter to the attention of the developer / content provider, I'd expect to see this app given a permanent "home" under 'Special Interest' in the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store within a few weeks of so-doing. In the meantime, if you don't wish to trawl through the 'Just Added' category of the channel store to find it, I suggest you take advantage of the built-in Roku 'Search' feature to locate and install it. Using this method, you probably won't even need to finish typing the words "X Massage" before seeing the channel listed among the 'Search Results' displayed on the right-hand side of your television screen. Failure to assign a permanent channel store category for the UK within the next two weeks (however) would mean that, once it ceases to be part of the 'Just Added' category, it would no longer be listed in the channel store. So, if you think you're likely to want this channel, my advice would be to install it by the end of May (at the latest) because, if the necessary edits are not made to the Roku channel package (.PKG file) by that time, you will not see it there afterwards. Needless to say, if/when the channel is edited to include a permanent channel store category for the UK, I'll update this listing with details of whatever genre has been assigned to it. As mentioned above I'd expect this to be 'Special Interest', but it could wind-up in another category.

TAKT1 (CLASSICAL MUSIC)...COST: FREE (14-day trial) + $15.00 (MONTHLY) [Roku Guide Review]

***FILED UNDER: "MUSIC" in the Roku UK Channel Store WHEN FIRST RELEASED***

***PLEASE NOTE:- That, despite no mention that this channel "May require additional fees" in order to view some (if not all) of the classical music concert videos therein, the official description from the Roku Channel Store does include wording to suggest that it may not be free-to-stream in it's entirety: i.e. "Start your free trial subscription now!" so, before you add this 'Takt1' app to your Roku device(s), I would advise that you first take a look at the various 'Takt1' subscription plans available (plus the benefits associated with each) so as to be fully aware of what to expect from the service. It is worth noting that there's also an ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION OPTION for USD $150.00 PER YEAR which is EQUIVALENT TO GETTING 2-MONTHS FREE... but, better still, at the time of writing the yearly fee has been further reduced to USD $120.00 PER YEAR with a LIMITED-TIME OFFER available through the website which doubles that benefit to 4-MONTHS FREE for those who register and elect to pay for a whole year. There's further good news for students... who, simply by sending a proof of student status from their school or university via email to service[at]takt1[dot]com, are then eligible to receive an individual coupon code for a 50% discount off the cost of whichever plan they choose. Payment methods include both Visa and Mastercard plus PayPal and you are able to register using your credentials for either Facebook, Google, or Amazon to avoid having to start a new account just for the 'Trakt1' website. Regardless of which plan you choose, even if that's just the 14-day trial, your subscription can be cancelled at any time... and because 'Takt1' are passionate about music, but not advertising, the entire service is ad-free for all users. The only (minor) caveats I could spot were that, during the free trial period, there are restrictions as to which of the 'Takt1' exclusive live stream recordings (i.e. on-demand content) you can access *PLUS* the fact any live-streamed events require a single purchase (i.e. one-off payment) to watch... whereas, with the 'Monthly' or 'Yearly' plans, you have instant access to everything with no restrictions and/or additional payments necessary! :-D

Should you require additional information the 'Roku Guide' review (see link above) features several useful resources for would-be 'Takt1' subscribers and, if that's not enough, the official 'Takt1' website has further advice on "How it works" as well as an online 'FAQ' section which covers most of the more frequently asked questions you might have. Failing that, there is a contact form as well as their 'Live Chat' service through which you can get real-time help (during office hours) or leave a message (out-of-hours) for further assistance should you need it! ;-) :-)

In the meantime... hopefully Roku can see to it that the official description for this 'Takt1' channel, which (currently) makes no mention of additional fees and/or subscriptions, is updated to reflect the fact that (aside from a brief free trial period) A SUBSCRIPTION WILL BE REQUIRED in order to maintain access to this classical music streaming service once the initial promotional offer has ended. As it stands, this appears to be both free-to-add and free-to-stream which (strictly speaking) it is not! :-/ :-(

JIMMYSTAR SHOW WITH RON RUSSEL..............................COST: FREE [Roku Guide Review]

***FILED UNDER: "COMEDY" in the Roku UK Channel Store WHEN FIRST RELEASED***

PLEASE NOTE:- That, despite featuring a double "l" ending for the name "Ron Russell" in the channel icon (aka 'HD Poster' image) for this Roku app, the developer (495 Communications) has (presumably?) used an incorrect spelling - with only one letter "l" included - when entering the title for this 'JimmyStar Show With Ron Russel' channel. This may have been on account of the character limit imposed by Roku for developers to name their channels… but, even so, it might have been better to lose the space - i.e. write "RonRussell" in a similar fashion to how "JimmyStar" has been entered - rather than lose a letter from the co-host's name. Either way, I just wanted to point-out this peculiarity so as to make clear that it was not a misspelling of the name "Ron Russell" on my part! ;-)

DOLLHOUSE MOVIES.....................................COST: £1.49 (MONTHLY) [Roku Guide Review]

***N.B. THIS WAS UNCATEGORISED in the Roku UK Channel Store WHEN RELEASED***

PLEASE NOTE:- That, while this 'Dollhouse Movies' channel for Roku devices can be found within the 'Just Added' category (i.e. genre) of the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store, no permanent category / genre had (at the time of writing) been assigned to this channel in the UK. If I somehow succeed in bringing this matter to the attention of the developer / content provider, I'd expect to see this app given a permanent "home" under 'Film & TV' in the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store within a few weeks of so-doing. In the meantime, if you don't wish to trawl through the 'Just Added' category of the channel store to find it, I suggest you take advantage of the built-in Roku 'Search' feature to locate and install it. As mentioned above I'd expect this to be the 'Film & TV' genre, but it could wind-up in another category.

I MARRIED JOAN...................................................................COST: FREE [Roku Guide Review]

***FILED UNDER: "COMEDY" in the Roku UK Channel Store WHEN FIRST RELEASED***

*********************************************

Anyhow, like it or not, that is your lot this week and, while I don't yet have an exact figure for the new apps which were added to the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store in the same time-frame, at least you have another 66 NEW CHANNELS to keep you occupied while I check the numbers! ;-) :-) Meanwhile, for those still clinging-on to their NowTV device(s) for whatever reason, I'm afraid to say that unlike most weeks, when there are zero new Roku channels (apps) added to the 'App Store'... this time there were TWO MORE CHANNELS REMOVED FROM THE NOW TV 'APP STORE' meaning the total number of apps has now been reduced to a choice of just forty-one Roku channels! :-(

In case you're wondering what the latest casualties of the seemingly ever-diminishing 'App Store' on NOW TV streaming products were... the apps for "Picasa Web Albums" plus the associated channel "Picasa Web Albums Screensaver" have now been removed, from the 'Photo Apps' category, as of this week. Moreover, with no 'TVPlayer' or 'Prime Video' channels (to name but two) among the app selection remaining in the NOW TV 'App Store' - despite having dedicated channels for both of them on UK Roku devices - the range of NowTV-branded products continues to fall short of the mark in terms of the current streaming needs for many in the UK. So, the best way to increase your choice of streaming services, is to swap any NowTV-branded products you own for genuine Roku-branded media players which provide access to 6,800+ apps of content from a vast assortment of providers! ;-)

To be fair, both channels were also removed from the Roku Channel Store, but... losing a couple of apps from a selection of over six thousand eight hundred is not such a crushing blow for Roku users as it is for those with NOW TV branded streaming devices which are close to offering ten channels less than the number of apps that were on the original (white) NOW TV Box when it first launched back in 2013. The likely reason for the removal of these two Roku channels (apps) is the deprecation of the Picasa API which was shut down in mid-March of this year and is no longer available for use. The corresponding page from the Google Developers' website - last updated on 15th March 2019 - advises developers to migrate their apps to the Google Photos Library API to avoid any disruptions to their apps. So, with this in mind, it would suggest there is an issue with updating the Roku channels for 'Picasa Web Albums' and 'Picasa Web Albums Screensaver' tied to the recent migration from one API to the other. At the time of writing, it is unclear whether either channel will be replaced by an updated 'Google Photos Library' equivalent but, if you've been wondering why those 'Picasa' channels are no longer available, then this is the probable cause for their removal from the Roku and NOW TV platforms. Given there's been a string of comments about related issues posted on the 'GitHub' page of the developer (now closed to new posts) it is even possible no "fix" will be forthcoming at all! :-(

In any event, hopefully everyone in the UK with a Roku player managed to find something they like within the sixty-six "public" channels outlined above... or else the "private" channels "gifted" to you via the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels to this blog, at various points over the past six years. However, if you didn't find anything to add to your own Roku channel selection from the assortment of apps on offer this week, you can always pay us a visit another time when, with any luck, there will be something more to your liking. After all there's no point installing every app because, when it comes to adding new channels to your Roku devices, IT'S YOUR CHOICE and, as with all things Roku... THE CHOICE IS ALWAYS YOURS!

*********************************************

As touched upon previously, you can expect my usual summary of all the goings-on (or not) in the (severely restricted) Roku Channel Store (aka "App Store") that features on NowTV devices to carry on in future posts. Meanwhile, whether you happen to own a Roku player, NowTV Box, OR BOTH, as I do... be sure to check my earlier posts (as mentioned before) for all the new additions to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store in each of the two hundred and forty-nine preceding weeks, then come back again in seven days' time for my next 'Weekly RoundUp'. Hopefully, by the time I make my next post, I may even have sorted out another (new) companion Twitter Feed to replace the now suspended: @ukrokuchannels account so there'll still be a presence on the social media platform via which up-to-the-minute info on Roku-related matters (here in the UK) is posted on a daily basis!

Until the next time, then...

That's all folks !!

  1. It looks like the 'X Massage Factory Channel' is blacked-out (temporarily?). I don't know what's going on here. Does the developer have any contact info? (PRBC Network)

    1. Hi.

Sorry for the (slight) delay in replying to your comment.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to track down the developer of this Roku channel. The only other Roku-specific reference I could find for the 'PRBC Network' development team was an earlier release, published back in February this year, that featured as part of my 'Weekly RoundUp #310' [SEE: https://ukrokuchannels.blogspot.com/2019/02/roku-uk-channel-store-weekly-roundup-310.html FOR DETAILS] which was a Roku channel dedicated to Iranian Cinema, originally called "Iran ICC" but later rebranded as "Iran ICC Live", and no further details were forthcoming. If you'd like to check-out that channel, you will find it in the Roku Channel Store online [https://channelstore.roku.com/details/273209/iran-icc]. It is unclear whether Roku 'Direct Publisher' was used with their latest app for 'X Massage Factory' but, according to the official description of their "Iran ICC" channel, they definitely used that to publish the first one. Sadly, when developers use 'Direct Publisher' to release their Roku channels, the details are often very sketchy... and it can often be practically impossible to track-down the individual developer(s) based on the details they leave within the Roku app description - ever tried looking for a developer by the "name" of '1975' regarding their Roku apps? Don't bother! The only thing I can suggest is to either contact Roku, who can approach them on your behalf, or to try uninstalling the app (then unplug your Roku) before adding it again from scratch (once your Roku has rebooted again) which is standard procedure when you are having issue(s) with just one app and all other Roku channels appear to function normally on the same device.

Hope that is of some use to you!

Many thanks for reading tise blog and taking the time to comment! ;-) :-)
